4:30-6:30pm. The SISD Open House at Americas High School is scheduled for Nov. 5th starting at 5:15pm. District will be providing flyers to go home with students and posters to be posted around campus. We will be giving out Free Jeans Bracelets to students whose parents attend the Open House for them to wear jeans the following day. Early Release for students is Wednesday, Oct. 29th-PK-K at 11:00a.m. and 1st-5th at 11:30a.m. The Halloween Dance will take place on Oct.31st.
Mr. Martinez, counselor, shared that the Red Ribbon Week Kick-off starts on Friday, Oct. 24th. The activities for the week are as follows: wear red on 10/24; door decorating on 10/27-judging on 10/31; essay contest-top 3 from each class-10/28; knock out drugs-wild hair day 10/29; Put a Cap on Drugs-design cap w/ anti-drug slogan 10/30; costume parade-anti-drug super hero 10/31.
Mr. Martinez asked teachers to provide artwork for our PIEs for Veteran’s Day.
Mr. Martinez informed the committee that our Meet and Greet event for CHAMPS (mentors and mentees) took place today. It went very well. He asked teachers to ask their colleagues to provide ideas to mentors on concerns mentors could possibly address with mentees from their class.
We will be holding our Burger King Family Day on Oct. 29th from noon to 9:00pm. The first 50 will receive a candy bag from Texas Kids Dental. Skellington will be on campus to promote the event.
Ms. Del Rio, librarian, explained the Storybook Pumpkin Patch contest. A flyer was sent home inviting students to participate by decorating a pumpkin at home that represents a character from a storybook. On Thursday, Oct. 30th, from 5:00-5:40pm students and their families are invited to come vote for their favorite pumpkin. The winners will be announced at 6:00pm. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners.
Mrs. Rodriguez explained that they are working on organizing and cleaning up the SHARE Drive. Different folders will be created in which to save work; items will be wiped out that do not belong or are no longer relevant; people who don’t need to share or don’t need access will be removed; teachers need to decide what they want to keep and start moving items into said folders—ask for help if they need it; nothing will stay where it is at this time—everything that hasn’t been moved will be wiped out in January. So, if you want to keep it, move it into designated folders.
Mrs. Lopez reminded the committee that the Fall Festival is right around the corner, November 14th from 4:30-7:30pm. All employees are expected to participate. Each booth can spend up to $25 for prizes/materials unless they operate with donated items. Mrs. Lopez wants SIT members to go back and decide as a grade level if they want to split profits equally amongst all teachers (even if someone cannot participate due to an emergency). Grade levels will be asked to donate items for the school food booth. Students who bring items will be given a free jeans pass for the Monday after the festival. Teachers and front office will need to keep track of who brings items. Mrs. Garcia, Parent Liaison, sent out flyers inviting vendors to buy tables. Teachers need to sign up for booths with Mrs. Garcia.
Mrs. Pon reported on Safety. We will be conducting a Reverse Evacuation (bringing students in from the outside). If this were an actual emergency and the situation arose during lunchtime, the teachers who are at lunch during the reverse evacuation would have to assist by picking up their students and taking them back to class. Other happenings concerning safety include: EXIT doors are all numbered in order to make them easier to identify when giving directions during an emergency; a ramp has been installed outside the cafeteria to make exiting during fire drills easier for Special Ed students and students in wheelchairs. Teachers were reminded to wear their IDs on a daily basis.
Mrs. Pon commented that teachers need to continue to document tardies and email her regarding concerns with tardies and absences. We provided popsicles for the students in the classes that spelled out ATTENDANCE. The next time classes are rewarded we will pass out popsicles again.
Other Business:
Mrs. Del Rio asked if school would be interested in wearing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness-date TBA.
Ms. Garcia relayed a concern from kinder teachers. They want to know what can be done to have PE start exactly on time. Given that PE is extra for kinder and PE is not their conference time, Mrs. Lopez recommended that they go to PE 5 minutes later as it would make it easier for 4th grade to have enough time to exit the cafeteria. She asked grade level reps to remind their colleagues to pick up their students on time.
The meeting adjourned at 4:40pm. .

*for a description of the decision-making areas, please see below.

S.I.T. Committee Decision-Making Areas (TEC 11.251)

Planning:

Under state statute the planning and decision-making process is presented as an integrated process (TEC 11.251). The planning process involves the professional staff of the district, parents and community members in conducting a comprehensive needs assessment, establishing and reviewing the district’s and campuses’ goals and performance objectives. District and campus-level plans are developed, including strategies, personnel assignments, time lines, resources/budget necessary to accomplish performance objectives and student-outcome related methods for incremental evaluation of the implementation of the plans. The plans are developed, reviewed, and revised annually for the purpose of improving the performance of all students.

Budgeting:

To effectively address budgeting, committee members should be given an annual orientation in budget-building and use of funds.

Sample of the types of issues committee members may be interested in addressing with respect to budgeting:

  • What conditions, if any, are associated with the use of different funding sources?
  • How can budgetary allocations be shifted to be used for different purposes (e.g., using funds allocated for personnel salaries to buy materials or equipment?
  • Are state compensatory education funds budgeted to supplement the regular education program?

Curriculum:

A key area that impacts student outcomes is that of curriculum. This area may include issues related to instructional methods, as well as the selection of subject areas and the organization of essential knowledge and skills within subject areas. At the high school level, campus committees may consider whether to offer magnet programs; at the elementary level, determine how to integrate the critical elements of art and music into the elementary curriculum; and at the middle school level, address how to incorporate violence prevention strategies into the curriculum.

Staffing Patterns:

This area may address a wide variety of topics. It may refer to the team composition of instructional units (e.g., for block scheduling teams, instructional departments, or interdisciplinary teams). It may address the chain of command and duties for teacher aides and campus volunteers. Staffing patterns may refer to the scheduling of staff within the instructional day and the structure provided for teams to schedule planning periods in a coordinated time frame.

School Organization:

This area may address the physical organization of the building, the allocation of equipment and materials, and the use of space for regular and special functions and services.

Sample questions that may be addressed pertaining to school organization are:

  • Is the organization designed to enhance the success of all children with regard to promotion/retention procedures, scheduling of classes, etc.?
  • Does this organization link effectively with available external sources of support (e.g., human services agencies)?
  • Do students understand the campus structure and how to get appropriate assistance within the organization?
  • Is the organizational structure designed to react quickly and efficiently in a crisis situation?

Staff Development:

Staff development must be predominantly campus-based, related to achieving campus performance objectives established by the principal with the assistance of the campus-level planning and decision-making committee, and developed and approved by the campus-level committee (TEC ξ21.451). Questions that may be useful to consider with respect to this process follow:

  • Does the staff development involve reflecting on curricular and instructional issues, analyzing student achievement results, and reflecting on means of increasing student achievement?
  • What areas of the campus needs assessment indicate a need for improved instructional skills and methods?
  • Which student groups are in greatest need of improvement? Is there an indication that staff members may need development with respect to effective interventions with specific groups?
