Personal Finance and Economics

Prerequisites

None.

Description

Business economics and personal finance in modern society.

Objectives

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Develop a complete personal financial plan for an individual and for a family.
  2. Explain cash management,budgeting, and income taxes.
  3. Determine whether to lease or buy a house and an automobile by calculating payments on the loans used to finance them.
  4. Discuss proper and improper uses of credit and how to calculate payments, including APR.
  5. Explain life insurance, health insurance, and property insurance.
  6. List and explain the prerequisites to investing, investment categories, analysis of specific instruments using fundamental and technical analysis, and price and yield calculation.
  7. Compare and contrast consumer protection, rights, and responsibilities.
  8. List and discuss various types of deception and fraud that occur in the marketplace.
  9. Demonstrate how to resolve a consumer problem with a merchant.
  10. Explain how banks work, including checking accounts and electronic banking.
  11. Discuss the most important considerations in the selection of a job and career.

Purpose

To provide a comprehensive overview of personal financial planning and consumer economics. The course will cover the basic concepts, principles, and analytical tools in personal financialplanning, and the economics of choice in the marketplace from the perspective of the individual consumer. This is an unspecified elective course.
