Dear Educator,

In 1989, a group of California social studies teachers led by Bert Bower founded Teachers’ Curriculum Institute. This group of young teachers was dedicated to developing new ways to engage the increasingly diverse students they taught. These teachers combined cutting-edge educational theory with the realities of the classroom to create the TCI Approach – a way of teaching that motivates students and provides teachers a structure for achieving consistent, positive results. Today, TCI programs have revolutionized the way social studies is taught in thousands of classrooms across America. Our elementary program is called Social Studies Alive!

Social Studies Alive! is unlike the more traditional textbook programs that are currently available:

1. Created by Teachers For Teachers – Based in California, TCI is a company that realizes the importance of capturing the teacher voice in all facets of the publishing business. TCI is a company created by teachers for teachers.

2. Designed to Meet Standards –TCI’s core elementary programs are based on the National Social Studies Standards and the National Language Arts Standards. This allows for the integration of Language Arts and Social Studies in the elementary classroom.

3. Improves Performance on Standardized Tests – The powerful visuals and hands-on activities in TCI materials build strong historical memory. These instructional tools make learning “stick” for students long after they have completed an assignment or taken a chapter test. Students don’t just “cover” content, they retain it.

4. Considerate, Memorable Text – TCI is uniquely committed to providing students with considerate text that helps them navigate and comprehend challenging expository reading. This approach results in a book that students are eager to read and learn from. In fact, teachers who have piloted Social Studies Alive! 5. Technology –Teacher and Student subscriptions as well as online student resources provide opportunities for students to extend and enrich their learning and for teachers to integrate technology seamlessly into their classrooms.

The Teacher and Student Subscriptions are accessed through the TCI website, Once a subscription has been purchased the purchaser will receive an email from TCI prompting him/her to create an account. Teachers will be able to access their subscriptions for 6 years. If additional years are needed we can create custom proposals for those schools. It is important to note that in order for Student Subscriptions to be activated the school must also purchase a Teacher Subscription for the same program.
