We seek a biological scientist to oversee the day to day operations of a wildlife diagnostic workflow in the lab of Dr. Samantha Wisely at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. The position is 50% Laboratory management including 1) handling tissues including tissue homogenization and nucleic acid purification from tissues and whole-blood plus quality control and assurance; 2) performing quality control checks on data generated from PCR, RT-PCR and RT-qPCR assays for DNA and RNA viruses using conventional and real time chemistry; 3) assay troubleshooting; 4) management of reporting systems for providing clients with information in a timely manner. 10% Management of a Luminex assay, including workflow optimization and the generation of standard operating procedures (SOPs). 10% Field work including 1) capture and handling of wildlife using IACUC approved methods; 2) collection of biosamples from animals; 3) necropsy of dead animals using dissecting, surgical and necropsy tools, 4) maintaining all off-road field vehicles used for field work. 10% Database management including entering data, quality control of data, assimilating data from other collaborators, analyzing data, and occasionally producing reports. 10% Developing and maintain standard operating procedures (SOP) for frequently performed laboratory and field work. 5% Maintenance of laboratory and field equipment and assisting Biological Scientist I in ordering supplies. 5% Other related requests as needed.

Advertised Salary:

$40,000 to $48,000

Minimum Requirements:

Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field; or a master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with experience managing a laboratory and delegating tasks. Experience working in a veterinary diagnostic or academic lab where the candidate has developed standard operating procedures and maintained online databases is preferred. Basic understanding of biochemistry will be highly beneficial to the successful candidate. Applicants having experience in generating molecular genetic data, including next-generation data and analysis, or experience generating and validating serological data from surveillance studies should apply. This is a position that requires communicating with clients, academics and students in a professional manner.
