BiH: TRAFFICKING IN CHILDREN CHARGES FILED AGAINST BiH MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

SARAJEVO, October 25 (FENA) – Uzeir Kahvic from Sarajevo filed to the BiH Prosecutor’s Office criminal charges for trafficking in children and abuse of office against the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the legal successors of the BiH Ministry of Refugees, for the illegal taking hold of his daughter Sedina and making possible her adoption in Italy.
“The charges were filed because of the concealment of eight documents from the Court for Juveniles in Milan, including six summonses for court appearances and two information on the legal status of the daughter, which had they reached their destination, could have prevented the adoption”, legal representative in the prior process Jagoda Savic told FENA.
For the time being Kahvic is suing an unidentified perpetrator until the Prosecutor’s Office establishes if the eight documents were concealed by the BiH Consulate in Milan, the head office of the BiH Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sarajevo or the relevant competent ministry.
According to INTERPOL BiH the decision on adoption went into effect on May 18 2001.
The file of Sedina Kakvic, a girl from the “Ljubica Ivezic” orphanage who was adopted in Italy where she arrived in 1992 with the help of the Children Embassy, was opened before the Court for Juveniles in Milan last month. Her father Uzeir has been searching for her 12 years. Kahvic’s legal representatives in Italy Silvia Muti is preparing a request to the Italian court for the renewal of the adoption process. The BiH Constitutional Court and the Human Rights Chamber concluded that the human rights of Uzeir Kahvic were violated in this case.
46 children were evacuated to Italy in 1992 where they are thought to have been adopted. The evacuation was carried out with the approval of the then state authorities and all attempts to establish contact with those children ended in failure.
