Rules for the 8th national
‘Battery Buster Campaign’
Please note that due to legal changes which will be taking place as of next year, during this scholastic year the campaign will be running during the first semester only.
1.0 Eligibility
1.1 The 8th national ‘Battery Buster Campaign’ is open to all kindergarten, primary, secondary and post-secondary schools across the Maltese Islands.
1.2 All batteries collected until the end of December 2016 are eligible for the campaign.
1.3 All types of spent batteries are eligible for the campaign with the exception of car accumulators and UPS batteries. Any car accumulators or UPS batteries submitted by the school will not be considered for the purpose of the competition.
2.0 How to participate
2.1 Students should place a minimum of 5 spent batteries in a used paper or plastic bag. When placing the batteries in the bag, students are requested to leave the batteries loose and avoid the use of tape. This will facilitate the manual sorting process.
2.2 Each bag should be sealed using staples. On each bag the student must affix a label, on which the following details need to be clearly written:
· Name and surname
· Name of school
· Class
· Home telephone number
2.3 Students can fill as many bags as they wish, as long as each bag has a label with all the required details and each bag should contain a minimum of 5 batteries.
2.4 Each bag must be deposited in the designated battery bins
3.0 Collection of batteries
3.1 To facilitate collection, schools are requested to keep the battery bins close to the entrance.
3.2 The collection of batteries will be carried out by Wasteserv in the first weeks of the second semester.
3.3 Schools may request additional collection throughout the first semester in the event that battery bins are full. In such cases the school may contact Wasteserv on Freephone 8007 2200.
3.4 During collection, in the presence of a school representative, Wasteserv staff reserves the right to conduct spot checks on a random sample of batteries submitted for the competition to verify whether they are spent.
3.5 In cases where a sample is tested, the sample will consist of 5 batteries from 5 different bags. If the results are unsatisfactory (i.e. at least 1 battery shows a strong signal), a second sample of 5 batteries from 5 different bags will also be tested. In the event that the second sample is also unsatisfactory, all the batteries will need to be tested. Any batteries found to be unspent (i.e. having a strong signal) will be removed and their weight shall be deducted from the total weight. This exercise will be done at Wasteserv premises and the school will be informed of the results. Alternatively, the school may choose to retain the batteries and re-submit after any unspent batteries have been removed.
3.6 During collection, the school representative will need to sign a ‘Battery Collection Form’ (sample included below), the original of which is kept by the school while a copy is retained by Wasteserv.
4.0 Prize for winning school
4.1 The school which collects the largest amount of eligible batteries by weight per capita will be the winner.
4.2 The winning school will be awarded a prize of €1,000 to be used either in an educational project of an environmental nature or to be invested in school resources that are of benefit to the environment, ideally related to waste management. The reduction in the prize reflects the change in the duration of the campaign.
4.3 The winning school will need to provide evidence of how the grant is to be utilised and that the project has actually been completed.
4.4 The winning school is required to issue a press release containing information on how the grant was/shall be utilised and explaining that the funds were obtained through Wasteserv’s Battery Buster Campaign.
4.5 The winning school will be advised through an official letter and results obtained by each school will be published on the Wasteserv’s website. The results are expected to be published in the third semester of scholastic year 2016 / 17.
5.0 Prizes for participating students
5.1 All the labelled bags submitted for the competition will be entered into a random lottery draw, which is covered by a licence from the Lotteries & Gaming Authority (DPL/33/2016).
5.2 The draw is expected to be held in March 2017.
5.3 Prizes for this edition are:
1st prize: iPod Mini
2nd prize: iPod GoPro Hero
3rd prize – 12th prize: JBL GO Speakers
These prizes are kindly sponsored by V.J. Salomone Marketing Ltd, official distributors of Duracell.
5.4 Winners are only eligible to win one prize. If the same participant with multiple entries wins more than one prize, only the first prize adjudicated will be deemed as valid and subsequent prizes will be redrawn.
5.5 Winners will be advised by telephone and announced in the media and on the Wasteserv website.
5.6 Photos of winners may be used by WasteServ Malta Ltd and VJ Salomone Marketing Ltd for promotion of the campaign, including promotion on social media among others.
6.0 All decisions relating to the selection of winners will be deemed as final.
