Bath and North East Somerset Council, working in partnership with the Amateur Swimming Association,is looking to appoint an enthusiastic, organised, highly motivated and committed Performance Swimming Programme Director who is qualified to the highest standards in the sport to manage and lead the implementation and delivery of the performance swimming elements of its new AquaticsStrategy.

Based in Bath, a city designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site andwith a strong tradition in International and Olympic Sport, you will be taking responsibility for the performance swimming squad for Bath and North East Somerset (formerly the TeamBath Age Group and Youth Programme). This will involve planning and delivering the coaching, motivating the swimmers and showing strong leadership skills to work with local clubs to ensure the programme has strong local links.

The squad currently has 40 swimmers in it who are competing at regional, national and European level with a plan to grow this to 80 swimmers through working with local clubs and their coaches. Based in the University of Bath’s 50 metre pool, Bath Sports and Leisure Centre and Keynsham Leisure Centre you will be working to create a world-class training environment that builds a pathway to the ITC at University of Bath and other Intensive Training Centres, as appropriate to individual swimmers.

In addition to a track record of producing swimmers to National/International level you will have experience of managing a team of swim coaches and have the ability and skills necessary to effectively manage the day-to-day running of the coaching programme across a number of swimming pools within the city. Minimum UKCC Level 3/Equivalent is essential.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Excellence in coaching and the ability to motivate swimmers at all levels.
  • Consistency in coaching approach, using the long term athlete development plan.
  • Strong leadership skills to lead and mentor a team of experienced assistant coaches, and poolside helpers
  • Personal coaching of the top squad to prepare swimmers for County, Regional, National and International competitions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with local clubs, committee’sswimmers and parents.
  • Sound administration skills.
  • Commitment to oversee all squads within the programme structure and to attend weekend events to support club swimmers.
  • Ability to formulate training and competition programmes to reflect the needs of all levels of ability; focusing on continuing the successes of the Clubs.

The contract of employment will initially be on a fixed-term basis until March2012 with an agreed period of probation.
