Basketball Victoria Is Now Taking Applications from Suitably Qualified and Able Coaches

Basketball Victoria is now taking applications from suitably qualified and able coaches to join its 2018 Southern Cross Challenge coaching staff.

The Southern Cross Challenge (SCC) is the beginning of the high-performance pathway for identified athletes, coaches and officials. A Basketball Victoria initiative, the tournament is positioned to aid the development of those identified, providing an opportunity to take part in an elite tournament setting. The 2018 tournament will be the seventh holding of the event, which now sees teams from a range of Australian states and territories take part. Victoria Metro will enter 12 teams into the 2018 competition, with three male and three female teams selected to play in both the under-14 and under-15 age groups.

Coaching at an SCC tournament has provided a number of Victoria Metro coaches their first opportunity to work with high-performance standard athletes. And in the past, has been a part of their pathway to take on roles in both our National Intensive Training Program (NITP) and Victoria Metro state teams. Coaching, like all skills where mastery is being pursued, requires the investment of time. And the time invested into coaching in the SCC has proved valuable for many previous coaches.

The 2018 SCC Victoria Metro coaching staff will be made up of 36developing coaches from metropolitan associations. In addition, each Victoria Metro team will be led by a head coach with significant high-performance experience. It is their role across the week to lead, mentor and influence the assistant’s coaching style, providing insight into high-performance basketball. The coaching of the games and practice session will be a shared responsibility, with all staff members expected to lead their team at different stages and in various capacities across the tournament.
