Background: The Town of Farmville is a university community located approximately 64 miles from the City of Richmond, 47 miles from the City of Lynchburg and 76 miles from the City of Charlottesville. The Town is located in the Piedmont area of South-Central Virginia and in the northern portion of Prince Edward County and the most southern portion of Cumberland County. The Town of Farmville is the only incorporated Town in Prince Edward and Cumberland Counties and is rural in character, covering an area of 7.2 square miles, with developed areas of residences, community businesses and churches, interspersed in a gently rolling, central piedmont landscape. Approximately 6.53 square miles of the Town of Farmville is located in Prince Edward County with the remaining approximately .67 square mile of the Town of Farmville located in Cumberland County. The population density in the Town of Farmville is 968 persons per square mile with 329 housing units per square mile. The 2000 population indicates 6,845 residents, according to the U.S. Census of Population. The Town’s population has grown 11.7% since 1990 when the population was reported to be 6,046 by the U.S. Census. The Town seeks an experienced, progressive and energetic law enforcement executive to replace its retiring Chief. This community of 6,845 has a Police Department with 26 sworn and1 civilian positions and a department budget of $2,180,000. The position will function as a member of the management team reporting to the Town Manager in a Council-Manager form of government.

Responsibilities: The Chief is responsible for a department encompassing all aspects of municipal law enforcement including patrol, investigations, community policing, and management functions including staffing, training, personnel management, budgeting and purchasing.

The Town seeks a visionary with a strong track record in community relations, problem solving, community partnerships; staff development; and a high level of professional ethics and integrity. The successful candidate will be expected to work in collaboration with the Prince Edward and Cumberland County Sheriff's Offices, Longwood University police, other law enforcement agencies, Town management, and all Town departments in the Council-Manager form of government. Accordingly, the Police Chief will have direct reporting responsibilities to the Town Manager. The ability to apply mature judgment and sensitivity to working with citizens and various community organizations is expected along with possessing strong law enforcement technical skills, exceptional leadership and requisite management skills. The Town prefers candidates who have a background in both patrol and investigative work.

Acceptable Experience and Training: Ten years of experience in modern police work which has afforded progressively responsible experience in a variety of police functions including major command responsibilities, supplemented by formal training in police administration and scientific methods of crime detection. Bachelor's degree in a job related field is required. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.

Compensation: Hiring range is $60,000 - $80,000, depending on qualifications. The Town offers a competitive benefits package.
