GUIDELINES FOR APPLICANTS

  1. Please read the eligibility criteria to determine if your application will be valid. All Charlotte Fellow applicants must:
  • Be nationals of Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, South Africa, Zambia, or Zimbabwe.
  • Be 21-40 years of age
  • Have secured a place at an appropriate university and be ready to commence studies within one year of the award of the fellowship. Students applying to study in African Universities will have an added advantage.
  • Qualified women candidates working in conservation in eligible countries are particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Have exemplary work experience of not less than 5 years that indicates a commitment and outstanding motivation to conservation in Africa.
  • Have a field research plan, which has a direct link or is relevant to host country Conservation needs.
  • Demonstrate that they will remain working in conservation in home country in order to use their skills to make a contribution to conservation. Applicants are required to submit a letter of support or recommendation from their employer showing that they are working in and will continue to work in conservation in home country. If they are in the diaspora, applicants should get a letter of recommendation from the relevant government department in their home country to demonstrate their willingness to return to make a contribution to conservation in the country.
  • Individuals who have received a Charlotte Fellowship in the past and wish to reapply for another degree or extra funding are not eligible to apply.
  1. Make sure that all relevant sections are accurately and clearly filled out. Incomplete application forms will be disqualified.
  1. Application forms that are received after the deadline will not be accepted.
  1. Canvassing is not allowed. Any applicant who canvasses will be disqualified.
  1. Any applications that are not accompanied with all supporting documents will be disqualified.
  1. Any applications that AWF verifies that they contain incorrect information will be disqualified and if a fellowship has been awarded, it will be cancelled.
  1. Applicants should submit proof of acceptance to the proposed academic program (or proof of application and description of the academic program if acceptance has not been received; however proof of acceptance will be required before any funds are disbursed).
  1. Ph.D. or Mphil applicants must submit a copy of their research proposal for field research.
  1. Applicants for Masters Degree programs should submit brief statements of research interest of not more than 5 pages.
  1. Applicants are required to submit academic certificates, testimonials/recommendations from three referees with their application in addition to other supporting material e.g. a detailed and recent curriculum vitae, etc. Please note that references are considered as an important element in the assessment of applications. References should be sent together with the applications and should not be sent separately or at a later date.
  1. Each applicant must include a recent passport size photograph in their application. They could also send clear digital photos showing them at work in conservation.
  1. Funds requested must be expressed in US$.
  1. Application and reference forms as well as other accompanying documents must be submitted by 31 July 2009.
  1. In order to ensure that applications arrive on time, applicants are advised to use e-mail or express mailing systems such as DHL, EMS, etc.
  1. AWF reserves the right to publish the names and profiles of successful candidates in its materials and publications. By applying for this award, the applicant gives consent for such publication if their application is successful.
  1. The decisions of the AWF selection committee shall be final and may not be contested.
