Meeting 2891

Minister Zoe Bettison MP

Minister Zoe Bettison was elected to the South Australian Parliament as the Member for Ramsay in February 2012. She is currently the Minister for Communities and Social Inclusion, Minister for Social Housing, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Minister for Ageing, Minister for Youth and Minister for Volunteers.

Zoe was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Salisbury while at school, as a Youth Exchange student to Penang, Malaysia, and she is now an honorary member of that club. She spoke fondly of her association with Rotary and urged members to seek to address our membership challenges with diversity. In her role as Minister for Volunteers, she talked about the changing face of volunteering – it appears that many would-be volunteers today are more interested in volunteering for a particular cause than about being a member of a club – this presents organisations such as Rotary with new challenges.

Question time presented the Minister with some examples of difficulties in obtaining insurance/understanding what the insurance actually covers in circumstances where volunteers are involved. There was also considerable discussion related to requests by individual organisations for National Police Checks and Zoe said that she is working closely with her Department to better streamline the process.

The Club was fortunate to have the Minister present at our meeting and there was extensive discussion after her presentation. It was interesting to hear her views in relation to the challenges ahead for service organisations.

Presentation of Banner

Dr Jennie Wright presented the Club with a banner that was given to her recently, when she revisited the Canadian Rotary club that had hosted her, when she was a Rotary Youth Exchange student in the 1970s. She was delighted to tell us that the passage of time had not diminished the warmth that she felt and how fortunate her association with Rotary had been.
