Monday March 2nd Class 1: Arts Business Overview.

Presentation by Gene Meneray: Introduction.

Mixer-get to know each other (one hour).

Small group work: Introduction of Business Goals worksheet.

Assignment: Bring in current statement/resume/bio, and any other marketing materials.

Thursday, March 5th Class 2: The Economics of Visual Art.

Presentation by Gene Meneray: How is art sold? What determines the market? Who buys art? How does economics influence the art market?

Assignment: Continue work on Business Goals worksheet.

Assignment: Bring in current statement/resume/bio, and any other marketing materials.

Monday March 9th Class 3: Self Promotion.

Presentation by Nick Stillman: Creating an elevator speech. Marketing materials for the visual artist. Writing an effective artist statement, bio, and resume.

Assignment for 05/06/14 Select three words that describe your artwork and will be key to developing your artist. Create a 30-45 second verbal introduction about yourself as an artist.

Assignment for 05/27/14 Re-write artist statement, bio, and resume.

Thursday, March 12th Class 4: Marketing via the web and Social Media.

In class exercise: Elevator Speech speed dating.

Presentation by Gene Meneray: Effective use of the web and social media.

Assignment: Update/create social media channels. Prepare to present your artwork.

Monday March 16th Class 5: Creating an Artist Brand.

In class exercise: Present your images to the class.

What goes into branding? What is its relevance to a visual art career?

Small Group Work: Thinking about branding in a new way

Assignment for 05/20/14: Solidify your three key words to develop your artist brand.

Thursday, March 19th Class 6: Venues: Galleries, Art Shows, and Public Art

Presentation by Gene Meneray: Discussion of how galleries operate, things to consider when approaching a gallery; art shows and commissions; public art opportunities and becoming a public artist.

Monday, March 23rd: NO CLASS

Thursday, March 26th Class 7: Creating a personal business plan.

Presentation by Gene Meneray: How to create a balance sheet, profit and loss statements, and the beginnings of a business plan. Discussion of Copyright and Intellectual Property.

Small group work: Financial planning broad strokes.

Assignment: Create your financial plan.

Monday, March 30th Class 8: Career Planning and goal setting.

In class exercise: Finalize show promotion responsibilities.

Presentation by Gene Meneray: Open floor. The importance of goal setting.

Small Group work: Begin creating a personal career plan for the next five years.

Final assignment: Create your career plan.

Friday, April 10th: Group Artist as Entrepreneur Show opens in the Exchange Gallery, 1st floor of 935 Gravier St.
