AP Statistics Summer Assignment

This assignment is to review the basic concepts of statistics in preparation for the advanced level course work. These are all statistics skills/concepts presented in previous math courses.

Materials Needed:

Statistics textbook – The Practice of Statistics (see Mrs. Young to check out a book)

Newspapers/magazines or internet

Notebook/paper & writing instrument

TI-84 or 89 calculator

Part 1 – Introduction to Statistical Analysis assignment

-  Read Chapter P as a refresher of the generals of statistics, if you feel you need it (this overview will be helpful for the part 2 assignment)

-  Review/Read chapter 1 and do the following problems (each problem will be in the book as 1.#)

#6, 8, 11, 14, 26, 30, 32, 34, 40, 42, 50, 54, 58, 64, 66, 70

Please make special note of the Technology Toolboxes throughout the chapter. Those will show you how to do many of these things on the TI-84 or 89 calculator.

Part 2 – Real World Statistics

Find an article (online or in a newspaper/magazine) that discusses a statistical study. Print/cut out and read the article. Then, write a summary of the study in a well organized paragraph that includes the following information:

-  focus/purpose of the study

-  identify the population and sample size

-  identify if this was an observational study, an experiment, or a survey with justification

-  identify the individuals and variables in the study

-  classify the variables as categorical or quantitative

-  state the conclusion of the study and whether you feel those conclusions are valid and why

Attach the article to your summary.

This assignment is due the beginning of the first day of class.

The content of chapter 1 will be discussed briefly in class the first day as well.

This assignment will count as a weekly assignment grade. (formative assessment).

The 2nd day of class will be a test on the chapter 1 material. (summative assessment)
