“What’s this class about?”

We will be reading several non-fiction texts, poems, and full length works from various sources. We will begin with a study of close reading and rhetorical analysis and will progress into argumentative and synthesis writing. This course will also cover the study of literature (rhetorically), vocabulary, and grammar, along with research methods.

“How can I access information for this class?”

Mrs. Shepherd’s Website:

I will require you to become familiar with this as it has necessary class information and handouts.

“What do I need?”

  • A way to write down homework and important dates
  • Pencils, Pens, and at least three different color highlighters
  • Independent Reading Book (if you can’t get one I can provide you with one)
  • At least one section in a 3 ring 1 inch Binder, with college-ruled lined paper

“Why did you mark me tardy, or absent?”

I cannot mark you “here,” if you are not here. Please be here and in your seat by the time the bell rings. However, if you are really sick, please stay home. When you return, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed and make-up the work accordingly.

“What are DRL’s?”

Every day you are expected to complete a Daily Reflection Log. This consists of writing down the objective posted on the board when you arrive and completing a reflection of what you learned at the end of the period. Every week this is collected for 25 points and counts towards your class participation. Failure to complete DRL’s may result in failing this class.

“Do I have homework?”

Yes, you will have homework. Please make sure you set aside at least an hour a night to work for this class.

“Can you tell me my grade?”

Your grade will be based on every assignment that is given, and grades will be updated every three weeks. You are required to check your grade on aeries and have a meeting with me every 5 weeks. If you have a D or an F grade at that five-week marker, you will receive a letter home requiring a parent signature, and be expected to attend after school tutoring.

FINAL GRADE:100-90% A89-80% B79-70% C69-60% D

“May I go to the restroom or see the nurse?”

Please take care of your personal business before you enter class. However, if you must use the restroom or need to go to the nurse please ask. You will be allowed a certain number of passes before you will start to owe me your own personal time. Your agenda must be completed appropriately and can’t be used within the first 10 minutes of class, or the last 10 minutes of class.

“Can I use my phone, or listen to music?”

I will provide opportunities for you to use your cell phone as a resource and listen to music, however it will be case by case basis. Do not assume you can just have it out, or can use it whenever you please. Keep in mind that I reserve the right to still take away any cell phone, or ipod if it is being used inapporpriately. If you would like to receive it back you must be able to bail it out.

“How do I bail out my cell phone, iPod, or personal item?”

You will complete a random assignment, depending on the severity of the interruption.

“But it’s mine, why did you take it?”

A personal item is something that belongs to you, and you wouldn’t want taken away. Please keep them outside of this class or else I will take it away. This includes but is not limited to the following items: cell phones, ipods, hats, stuffed animals, make up, food, candy, coffee, gum, lasers, homework or notes from another class, any beverage other than water, earphones, headphones, sunglasses, jewelry, extra clothing, toys, games, skateboards, etc.

“Can I eat flamin hot cheetos or drink gatorade in here?”

No. If you are caught eating or chewing anything you will be responsible for cleaning my entire room. This includes pickng up things that may not be due to your own food.

“Can I charge my phone?”

No charging of any personal device.

“What’s all the Drama stuff for?”

I am also a Drama teacher, which means I will have a lot of materials, costumes, students, and supplies coming in and out of this room at various times. Please do not touch or use any of these items. If any of these items gets damaged or becomes missing after your class, you will be responsible (as a class) to replace it.

“What are your rules?”

Follow the school’s dress code policy.

Do not pack up early or line up at the door.

Absolutely no throwing things.

Be respectful towards Mrs. Shepherd, your classmates, classroom, books, materials, Substitutes, Administrators, or any other Adults/Teachers present in the room.

No foul language, disrespect, bullying or negativity about your classmates, teachers, or Century. You are here to learn and work hard. Bring a positive, respectful and polite attitude! 

“What if I break a rule?”

1. Verbal Warning/Conversation

2. Seat or classroom change, and completion of a behavior reflection report
