An Introduction to Subscription eBooks on the NHS Scotland e-Library

Introduction:

  • An eBook is an electronic version of an ordinary print title, which can be navigated and read on-screen. You can also print and save pages and chapters.
  • The collection covers a broad range of subjects, including all aspects of health; social care; management; education; personal development and many others. There are titles to suit clinical and non-clinical healthcare staff and partners and also to support patients and the public in learning about their health and healthcare needs. For clinical staff key titles include the Oxford Textbook series, the BMJ ABC series, and many other key reference texts. All eBooks can be accessed using your ATHENS password, and are linked from the NHS Scotland eLibrary which enables you to both browse and search the eBook titles.
  • eBooks are hosted by providers outwith the NHS Scotland eLibrary. Logging into the eLibrary homepage with your ATHENS password will provide you with seamless access to these resources.

Where to find eBooks:

  • Following the Books link on the NHS Scotland eLibrary home page take you to the Books homepage, which enables you to either search or browse eBook titles. You can also search from the eLibrary homepage, though going through the more specific Books page is more effective.

The eBooks homepage enables you to both Search and Browse books simply

Providers: There are three main providers of eBooks. An example of each is shown below

OVID:

OVID books are presented in a similar format to their databases, so may appear more familiar to many users. You will initially be taken to the homepage for your chosen title, which will contain the bibliographical details and contents.

Net Library:

Net Library is another provider of eBooks available via the eLibrary. Initially it may appear very different from OVID, but in reality the navigation systems and book presentation are very similar, and all resources are available with you ATHENS password.

When accessing texts on Net Library, despite being logged-in to the eLibrary homepage you will be asked to confirm your ATHENS log-in details

MD Consult:

The final eBooks provider is MD Consult, which has a main collection, and a collection of titles on pain medicine.

Non-Subscription eBooks:

There are also eBooks available via the eLibrary which do not require your ATHENS password to gain access. They can be found by searching or browsing in the same way as the subscription titles, but are available through a huge variety of different providers which we are unable to demonstrate in this booklet.
