Spring’s Many Pleasures Accompany New ‘Tweets and Bleats’ Cruise

Allow your family to embrace and enjoy spring’s pleasures, by booking a new seasonal experience created by Lake District cruise operator, Ullswater Steamers.

‘Tweets and Bleats’, running on both April 21 and 22, operates in conjunction with the RSPB, to enable passengers of all ages to appreciate flora and fauna in all its glory, at one of the most idyllic times on and around England’s most beautiful lake. The cruise also raises important funds for the work of the RSPB.

Ticket holders will gather at 10am at the Steamers’ Glenridding pier, at the south of the lake, to be divided into two groups. The first group will board the lovely Ullswater Steamer, Lady Dorothy.

They will depart for a sailing on the lake at 10.30am, with RSPB guides interpreting the wildlife appearing during the 75-minute cruise, as well as enabling passengers to view, while on the lake, the farm they will later visit.

On return to shore, they will be taken by minibus to visit a National Trust farm at Glencoyne, to see how the farm operates at lambing time and to meet the newborn lambs.Families will be able to learn more about Cumbria’s iconic Herdwick sheep breed and the conservation work which farming involves.

The last part of the trip is a viewing of Dorothy Wordsworth’s wood, where she and her brother, William Wordsworth, saw the Lenten Lilies being tossed around by the wind during a walk taken alongside Ullswater on April 15, 1802. This sight inspired William’s world-famous poem, ‘Daffodils’.

The other half of the party will have the same experience, but in a different order, starting with the farm trip and the viewing of the wood and ending with the lake cruise for a spot of bird and wildlife spotting.

Ullswater is a stunning lake, with the shadow of mighty Helvellyn being cast over its waters at one point and three distinct reaches of the lake, which each offer a different scenic perspective. Spring is one of the most beautiful times to sail on the lake, with daffodils gracing the lakeshore and adding a touch of Romanticism to the inspiring cruises.

Tickets for ‘Tweet and Bleats’ cost £14 for adults and £7 for children, with a reduction to £12 and £6 respectively for members of the RSPB and National Trust. Refreshments can be bought on board the boat, where toilet facilities are also available.
