ALL INDIA ONE-MINUTE FILM COMPETITION ON DISABILITY

Theme: “Equal opportunities for all”

Equal opportunity means that all people will be treated equally or similarly and not disadvantaged by prejudice or bias.

Did you know that persons with disabilities constitute the world’s largest minority?

It’s true! This group is incredibly diverse, including persons of all ages, genders, religions, ethnicities, and socio-economic levels.

What’s more… unlike other minority groups, this is not confined to a particular region, religion, historical or geographical area. It can be any one of us. This group transcends all religion, cast, creed, language or anything else. And any one of us can join this minority at any point of our life!!! That is to say… it is not just those who are born with disability. Anyone can acquire a disability at any point of their lives. Have you ever thought about that!

So when we prepare society, for persons with disabilities, we are actually preparing society for all human beings. All members of society and all citizens of the country. People as people first. And therefore, we need equal opportunities for all people. This is not just about “their” right to be able to participate on an equal basis in every aspect of life, but “everyone’s” right as well. Everyone needs to have the same opportunities and rights as everyone else, to be able to participate fully in the life of our communities.

This said, it is not enough to just lay bare these opportunities. These opportunities will have to be made accessible depending on the disability of the person who needs to avail of these opportunities. Like, sign language for the deaf, speech software and Braille for the blind, ramps and heights of counters for wheelchair users, hand rails and bars for those using calipers and so on.

Every building – private or public has to have access norms. Inclusive schools and colleges need to think of how they can make education accessible on par with non-disabled children. So too offices, auditoriums and cinema theatres, hotels and public transport.

There should be absolutely no discrimination for a person with disability – no matter what the disability. Moving around freely... living independently in the community… getting jobs... accessing information... obtaining proper health care... exercising political rights... making one’s own decisions... and being completely accepted.

Equal opportunities for all will become possible only if these opportunities, practices and accessible surroundings become mandatory and part of our society.People with disabilities have the same entitlement as anyone else to dignity, independence and full social participation as per their choice.

What would an equal opportunity, barrier free world look like?

A society where persons with disabilities would enjoy equal access to the same facilities as their non-disabled peer group – be it education, employment, culture or recreation.

A society with equal opportunities for all will mean that all citizens can live life, achieve dreams and realize their true/full potential.
