Assessment 2: Plant Observation Sheets

This unit has a graded assessment and that means your work will be recorded and reported to you as: Distinction (>=88%)*Credit (75-87%) or Competent(50-61%) or Not yet Competent (<50%). There are three assessment tasks for this unit and you must achieve a minimum of a Competent result for each to be deemed Competent in the unit.

You must successfully complete each section of this assessment. If your answers are assessed as being ‘not yet competent’ you will receive a resubmit grade. Your teacher will provide feedback indicating which areas require revision and how you can address these issues.

Assessment 2: Plant Observation Sheets

What you have to do

Select twenty plant species for detailed study from your Plant Study List. For each of these plants you must complete a Plant Observation Sheet based on an actual live specimen observed and photographed by you.

The plants must come from the following groups and should have a minimum of:

Horticulture Students / CLM Students
2 x evergreen trees / 2 x grasses
2 x evergreen shrubs / 6 x shrubs
2 x deciduous trees / 6 x trees
2 x soft wooded perennials / 6 x other – ferns, perennial, climbers etc..
2 x climbing plants
2 x annual plants
2 x conifers

The remainder are to be selected by you from any group on the Plant Study List. The PlantStudy List is posted on the OLS site under the Recognise plants unit.

Note: You may choose to use the same twenty plants for your Herbarium Collection in the unit RTD2004A- Collect, prepare and preserve plant specimens, if that is the case make sure you have read the requirements for that assignment before you start. You should be able to combine the two but if you don’t want to that is fine too, you’ll cover twice the number of species from the list!

Nb. Students who want to select species that are not on the study list must contact their teacher at OTEN to discuss this before starting the assignment.

Plant Observation Sheet

We have included a completed example to show you both the type of information and the level of detail we expect for this assignment. Use your Recognise Plants learning resource combined with the completed example. You will also find that you can use a lot of the information available through your Plantfile® access but please note that this alone is notsufficient (see references section of the sheets).
