Students will learn the skills and principles involved in the development and function of advertising and the production process. Students will apply aesthetic theories and technical skills to graphic design objectives. Elements covered are design, illustration, typography, photography, computer graphics, advertising techniques, and preparation of camera-ready copy for print material.

Occupational competency assessment of skills and knowledge covered for an instruction program focusing on the advertising design job market sector
National Occupational Competency Testing Institute (NOCTI) / Pass the NOCTI knowledge-based exam (2019) consisting of 193 test items. Test includes color, reproduction, typography, tools and equipment, printing surfaces, drawing/illustration, production, computer literacy, photography, communication, skills, and design. / During 2004 through 2006, 355 Virginia students have taken this assessment with 188 scoring at or above the national norm.
2006: 168 Virginia students took the assessment with 92 scoring at or above the national norm.

Brainbench Desktop Publishing Software Certifications*
Certification of knowledge and skills required for one or more skill set areas relating to knowledge of industry-leading graphics, page layout, and publishing software.
Brainbench / Pass any one assessment in the Desktop Publishing Software skill cluster (see +note at top of this section). These assessments provide certification of specific skill set knowledge of industry-leading graphics, page layout, and publishing software. Examples: Adobe Illustrator 8.0, Adobe PageMaker 6.5, Adobe Photoshop 7.0, Macromedia Director 8, Quark Xpress. / State sponsored training academies have been conducted through which 22 CTE teachers have achieved Brainbench Adobe Photoshop Certification.
2005-06: 68 students were reported as having earned a Brainbench Desktop Publishing Software Certification.
Reimbursement “snapshot” for 2005: 27 students attempted this test with 23 passing. / Choose one of the following:
