Type of Assessment / How the Assessment is Used / Examples
(This is not an exhaustive list)
Universal Screener / Universal screening is a process whereby measures are administered once at the beginning of a school year to all students. The purpose is to quickly determine which students may be at-risk for experiencing difficulties in learning grade-level mathematics content. Of course, after determining those students who might be at risk, a more detailed diagnostic measure would be given to those children to determine their level of foundational numeracy development and needs. The screening process should include various measures, which may include clinical interviews, standardized measures, and/or school assessments. / Standardized:
NWEA MAP,
Easy CBM (free!),
Discovery Ed Think Link,
Terra Nova,
STAR Math
Interview-based:
Colorado Screeners,
Students Numeracy Assessment Progressions,
mClass Math
Diagnostic Assessment / Diagnostic assessments may be administered during or after the initial screening process and can help teachers understand a student’s gaps and progress in numeracy foundations and how to best address student need. They are administered to children who were identified as possibly lacking numeracy foundations. Diagnostic assessments are also important for determining if and when a student should enter or exit the supplemental intervention class. / Math Recovery/AVMR Diagnostic Assessments,

Progress Monitoring and Formative Assessment / Progress monitoring measures are administered frequently, but no more than once every two weeks. These measures should be quick and easy to administer and should provide guidance to the teacher about the student’s progress toward developing a strong foundation in numeracy. Progress monitoring tools should also be formative to provide information to the teacher about gaps and needs in student numeracy development. / Dreambox

Outcome/
Summative Measure / Outcome/summative measures are administered at the end of the school year to assess whether the instruction provided was sufficient to help students master grade-level standards. The universal screening or diagnostic measure(s) may be given as a post-assessment, thereby providing pre- and post-assessment evidence of the change in academic achievement. / See universal screening measures and diagnostic assessment examples above.
