Estimated time to complete: minimum of 3 hours, depending on connection speed. This is a lab you may wish to complete in sections.

We will accomplish this task using a Virtual Server to host the Windows Server and client operating systems. Each student is assigned two virtual machine. Check Blackboard for your assigned student number

Please be aware – these labs take patience!. Don't let yourself get frustrated when things aren't simple. Use good research skills, ask for assistance, and post your problems and solutions on Blackboard for the rest of the class.

1. Create a VPN connection to your assigned VPN location (Lab 1).

2. Using Windows Internet Explorer, navigate to http://192.168.9.10/rdweb if you are assigned at netlabWIC, or http://192.168.10.11/rdweb for netlabMV. Note: other web browsers will not function properly, so use Windows IE.

3. At the certificate Error page, click "continue to this website (not recommended)"

4. Log in using your username and password (the same one you use with Blackboard and mysvc).

5. Click on Hyper-V Manager

6. At the remote app, click Connect. You can choose to allow your clipboard, printer & drives to connect at this time.

7. Log in again using your MySVC username and password.

8. The first time you come to this page, you will be required to install the Active-X control. Note – depending on many factors set up on your machine, you may need to complete more research in order to install this active-x control. Click the yellow bar (not the x a the right), and choose to install the add-on. You will also may need Remote Desktop version 6.1 to connect properly. If the machine you are using has the latest service packs installed, this should not be a problem. See notes at the bottom of the lab if you need to update the local machine

9.Connect to the remote application manager, you will again be required to log in with username / password.

10. Find your assigned machines named: xxClient and xxServer (xx is your assigned student number).

11. Double-click or click to highlight your assigned machine name, from the menu that appears at the right, click on Connect. Again - log in.

12. You are now looking at the virtual machine starting up.

13. The correct DVD is currently in the DVD tray, so the machines will boot up from the DVD and be ready to begin the installation of both the client and the server.

Notice the top menu on the connection window when the machine is pulled up (below) . The first icon represents the Ctl-Alt-Del key. You cannot simply use Ctl-Alt-Del at your workstation, or you will be controlling your local machine. This is how you control your remote machine. Also on this menu are other controls to turn off/on, shutdown, pause etc. Point the mouse at these controls to understand what they do.

Now you are connected, time to install operating systems!

Brief installation instructions for Windows 7 (client machine)

Accept all defaults except:

When asked “where do you want to install windows?” Choose Disk 0, unallocated space

Username – you choose

Computer name – xxClient (xx is your assigned number)

Computer location - work network

When you have entered the basic windows, complete the following:

·  Change the networking TCP/IP V4 to a static address – use the assigned IP numbers

If your student number is 01, then your IP number is 192.168.9.121

The following settings are for all machines:

subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
Gateway WIC: 192.168.9.1 MV: 192.168.10.1
Preferred DNS WIC: 192.168.9.3 MV: 192.168.10.11
Alternate DNS WIC: 134.39.49.29 MV: 10.30.40.17

Test by navigating to a web page such as www.google.com. If you cannot reach this, then there is probably a typo in your numbers above.

·  Create an administrative user named dunn with a password of cisIsTheBest!

·  Change the workgroup to cis.local (right-click computer, properties)

·  Change the product key to C7FY3-TH7MH-QXGVH-F33WQ-PD8DT and activate Windows

·  Enable Remote Desktop, add the "authenticated users" group to the allowed remote desktop users group.

·  Install any and all updates from Microsoft

·  Install Antivirus software from (start and enter the following) If challenged for a username and password, use your mysvc credentials. Click on the Start button, then type

if you are assigned to WIC, type : \\192.168.9.10\cisstu\apps\ANTIVIRS\Vipre\SBEAgent-WIC_labs
if you are assigned to MV, type: \\192.168.10.11\cisstu\Apps\ANTIVIRS\VipreAgent-default
Choose all defaults, ensure any updates succeeded.

·  Other software is available to setup on your virtual machine if you wish to browse around in the apps directory. Keep the installations to a bare minimum since we have very limited disk space on our host servers.

Brief installation instructions for Windows 2008 Server machine

Choose the standard edition of Windows 2008 server (full interface)

Set up on Choose Disk 0, unallocated space – one partition is fine

Your Full Name – put your full name, company is CIS SVC

Computer name: xxServer (xx is your assigned number – xxClient, xxServer)

Administrator password: cisIsTheBest!

(note – use the proper case, don’t’ forget the !))

·  Log into the machine with the username of administrator and the password cisIsTheBest!

·  Install the mouse interface (integration services ) as you did with Windows 7, and reboot.

·  Change TCP/IP to static address – use the assigned IP numbers

If your student number is 01, then your IP number is 192.168.9.101 for WIC, or 192.168.10.101 for MV

Gateway WIC: 192.168.9.1 MV: 192.168.10.1

Workgroup or Domain? Workgroup – CIS.local

·  Enable Remote Desktop (right-click on my computer, properties, remote) add the "users" group to the allowed remote desktop users group. Basic install is done!

Security updates for the server:

·  Install Microsoft Windows Update

·  Set automatic updates to update every night at 4 am.

·  While you are in the accounts section, make the following accounts: (right-click in the right hand pane, click new user). Choose your own naming convention (following a pattern) and create the following accounts

1.  an account with “administrative” powers.

2.  an account with “power user” powers

3.  an account with “user” powers

4.  an account named “dunn” with the password of cisIsTheBest! with “administrative” powers.

•  Rename the guest account with something un-guessable. Create a password, ensure it is disabled

•  Set security options:

Click on Start, Administrative tools, local security policies, local policies, security options

Find "Accounts - rename administrator account" change the administrator name to cis221

Find the “Interactive logon - do not display last user name” and enable it

• Install Antivirus software the same as you did for the client.

Do not install office programs on your server! You do not want to use a server as a workstation.

·  Check the event viewer (administrative tools, event viewer). If you have errors that should be resolved, use your Google experience to assist in resolving the errors. One good resource is technet (http://technet.microsoft.com) Put the entire error message in the search and see what comes up. If you have questions about the errors or cannot find a resolution, let me know.

In Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, Terminal Services Web Access (TS Web Access) is a role service that lets users start Terminal Services RemoteApp programs from a Web browser. When a user starts a RemoteApp program, a Terminal Services session is started on the Windows Server 2008-based terminal server that hosts the RemoteApp program.
To start a RemoteApp program, a user connects to a Web site that is hosted on the Windows Server 2008-based TS Web Access server. When the user connects to the Web site, a list of available RemoteApp programs appears. Additionally, TS Web Access lets users connect to the remote desktop of any server or client computer on which the user has the required permissions.
You must have Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client version 6.1 installed to use TS Web Access. RDC 6.1 is available with the following operating systems:

·  Windows Server 2008

·  Windows Server 2008 R2

·  Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (SP1)

·  Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3)

Note RDC 6.1 (6.0.6001) supports Remote Desktop Protocol 6.1.
