Dear Parent/Carer

Sacred Heart Secondary Academy have been offered an exciting opportunity for our Year 10 girls. The Royal Air Force are running an`Engineering Work Experience Residential` course during the academy’s summer break at RAF Leeming, North Yorks. The residential is for the week of 1st – 5th August 2016.

The prime objective of the week is to give students real hands-on experience of working in the engineering field. There is no better way to experience the power of engineering than by seeing it first-hand and how it solves real life problems. This course will team your daughter with RAF and other engineers, who will guide her through every step of the process.

Activities students will undertake;

  • Design and build products using a range of different materials.
  • Learning the practical applications of the techniques and processes they will be using.
  • Understand the importance of budgets in the developing designs and materials, allowing them to calculate the financial impacts of their decisions.
  • Working alongside real engineers drawing on their knowledge and putting your daughter’s new skills into practise.
  • Gain valuable employment skills, working in a team, communication, time management, problem solving, planning and presentations.
  • Working towards a British Science CREST Award and an Industrial Cadet Award.

Objectives of the course;

The course will give your daughter lots of opportunities to push herself out of her comfort zone, to try new things that she didn’t think she was capable of and to work with people she might not have met before. By taking every one of these opportunities and trying her hardest throughout the course, she will discover something new about herself and begin to develop the employability skills that are critical in adult life.

The event is funded by the Royal Air Force and therefore is at no cost to parents/carers apart from the cost of transport to and from RAF Leeming on the first and last day, which is the responsibility of the parent/carer. All food, accommodation and transport during the week will be provided along with any necessary items of specialist clothing.

If your daughter is interested in applying for this fantastic opportunity please sign the attached slip and I will provide further details,including the online link to apply for a place. Numbers are limited to 40 in total from all schools so a quick response is recommended.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Mrs Jill Wright

I would like my daughter to apply to take part in the Royal Airforce Engineering Work Experience residential. I understand that applications need to be made online and that places will be allocated by the Royal Airforce and not the academy.
