ROLE

A Teacher Assistant supports the classroom Teacher by working to enhance the effective provision of differentiated learning experiences and assisting in the provision of optimal duty of care for students in an environment where the emphasis and priority is on working directly with students in either a group or one on one situation.

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction and guidance of the Deputy of Teaching and Learning and class teachers
  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Programmes for students and help monitor their progress
  • Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
  • Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists and occupational therapists, as necessary
  • Assist class teachers with maintaining student records
  • Support students with emotional or behavioural problems and help develop their social skills
  • Working under limited supervision following standardised practices and/or methods
  • Utilisation of some resources from other allied bodies (such as AISSA, Novita) may be required to perform job functions
  • Helping with general housekeeping and kitchen tasks
  • Communicate and meet parents, Teacher’s, Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning and School Counsellor

SPECIAL EDUCATION DUTIES

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives
  • Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. diapering, medication etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs and/or developing children’s daily living activities and behavioural skills
  • Applies and removes physical therapy appliances as instructed (e.g. body brace, leg braces etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the student has the proper equipment according to the IEP plan
  • Assists students by enabling them to access their electronic communicators, switches, pointers, feeders etc. for the purpose of ensuring equipment is hooked up properly and functioning properly
  • May be required to assist students in and out of wheelchairs; transporting students in their wheelchairs in and around school and on field trips for the purpose of ensuring the student gets to and from school and to the proper places safely
  • Physically assisting students with tasks likeeating, using the bathroom, riding the bus and moving from one classroom to another.
  • May be required to tailor lessons to an individual student's needs or assist students with especially challenging assignments. May also monitor and record a student's progress or behaviour in an effort to better meet a student's needs.
  • May also work closely with teachers to prepare lesson plans that best fit the needs of their students. They may also clean the classroom and prepare demonstrations or visual aids for specific lessons.
  • Assists with pre-lunch and lunch activities (e.g. feeding etc.) for the purpose of helping the teacher get the student fed
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, behaviour management, CPI, IEPs, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives
  • Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. lunch, playground, classroom, restroom, field trips, assemblies etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment
  • Participates in the implementation of IEP goals for the purpose of meeting IEP goals
  • Performs clerical tasks (e.g. making copies, filing etc.) for the purpose of helping the teacher get instructional materials ready
  • Provide instruction, under the supervision of the teacher, to the students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, giving oral tests etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEPplans, and ensuring students’ success in school.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Monitor students participation and progress, providing feedback to teachers
  • Assist in planning and preparing the learning environment setting up learning centres and prepare materials and supplies
  • Support class teachers in photocopying and other tasks in order to support teaching
  • Undertake other duties from time to time as the Deputy of Teaching and Learning requires
  • Assist classroom teachers as necessary

  • Expect a list of other duties that the Deputy of Teaching and Learning may from time to time ask you to perform
  • Assist the teacher in other appropriate ways
  • Attending staff meetings and recommended training programs and conferences
  • Participating in professional workshops that work for the improvement of early childhood education
  • Supervising outside playgroup activities
