A NEWSLETTER FOR THE WOMEN AT THE DUNES

NUMBER 104 APRIL 2015

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

With the pennant season well under way I would like to remind everyone of the Pennant Dinner being held on the night of the last game on Thursday April 16. This is where all women members can get together, celebrate and relax at the end of a successful season with a two course meal, entertainment, dancing and whatever goes. It is a good fun night and a great way to close the pennant season. See Anne Stephens and she will supply you with an envelope for payment either by cash or using your ball account (cost $35.00). Anne will also take your meal preference (choice of two mains and two desserts, vegetarian / gluten free options available).

Our first Guest Day for the year is being held on the Monday April 20 and the cost for this is $55 for Dunes and $50 for Cups members. A list of tee times is in the old club rooms. If you are not bringing a guest and wish to play and have lunch the cost will be $20.00. Payment can be made to Penny White or Pam Keogh by way of an envelope nominating your payment preference i.e. cash or ball account.

This will be a very busy week at the club as The Dunes Bowl is being held on the Tuesday April 21. I wish our Dunes team every success.

I would ask members to consider nominating for positions for the 2015 / 2016 women’s committee. Our Annual General Meeting is being held on the Thursday July 24, 2015 where all positions are open for election. If you are interested in nominating for committee positions Sharyn Stephenson and I would be more than happy to discuss this with you.

Once the pennant season is completed the fund raising committee and I are organising for the charities nominated (Rye CFA and Sailability) and their representatives to come to the club where Barb Boneham will present them with cheques raised through special efforts.

I trust everyone had a very happy and safe Easter.

Brenda Miller

Women’s President

*** Payment for the Pennant Dinner and Guest Day MUST be paid by MONDAY APRIL 13 for catering purposes.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT & GOLFING EVENTS

HOLE –IN-ONE

Congratulations to Robin Galloway who had a hole-in-one on the 6th Hole of The Cups on March 23.

Congratulations also to Kerry Vaughan who had a hole-in-one on the 6th Hole of The Cups on March 28.

EAGLES

Ann Scott, Trish Stewart and Sharyn Stephenson have all had eagles on The Dunes course over the last two months.

PENNANT

The Pennant season is drawing to a close with only two matches to be played. Division 1 has won 3 of 5 matches and is second on the ladder at the moment, while Division 2 has won 1 of 4 matches and is battling hard to retain their position in this division. I’m sure they can do it and I wish all players the best of luck for the remaining matches.

Division 1 will be hosting Pennant at The Dunes next Thursday April 9. There will be no club competition on The Dunes but there are extra times allocated on The Cups where the game will be Canadian Foursomes. There are also some times available on The Dunes after the Pennant players have hit off and members may enter the Course competition if they wish.

PURPLE FOLDER

Just a reminder that there are a lot of invitations for events such as Open Days, Charity Days and Bowls placed in the purple folder in the old clubhouse. This is a cheap way to have a game of golf with your friends at many different courses. Any Bowl entries for which the Women’s Committee pays (this includes all District Bowls and small number outside our district) are placed on the noticeboard. I would encourage all members to consider putting you name forward to play in these events. Please don’t be put off if there are already names on the sheet as the Match Committee tries to give as many members as possible an opportunity to represent the club.

RESULTS OF EVENTS

Monthly Medal #3: Ann Scott

Cups Brooch #3: Claire Pearce

Saturday Brooch #2: Siobhan Stephan

Saturday Brooch #3: Tracey Higginbottom

RWH 4BBB: Di Wilkinson and Barb Boneham were the winners and will be representing our club at the District Final on August 7 at The Dunes. Ann Scott & Robyn Moore will also be playing for the Dunes at this event.

Saturday 4BBB Stableford Trophy: Congratulations go to Penny White and Maryann Elson who won this event with a score of 45 points.

Junior Championship: This was held over two rounds during the Men’s Championship. Our congratulations go to Liam Reid who was the Junior Champion and also to Siobhan Stephan, one of our two junior girls, who won the nett event in the Championship by a large margin. Well done Siobhan!! Four of our juniors will be competing in the Eric Lucas Trophy, a PDGA event, over the school holidays. The Women’s Committee has paid the entry fee for these juniors. The money comes from the fund that is set aside for Junior Development using members’ donations from our Library.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Club Championship: April 30, May 4 and May 7. Entries are now open and close on April 23. Entry fee of $4 and entry forms are to be placed in the provided envelopes and put in the “pink” events box. Thank you to Sandra McLellan for collecting and collating the entries. The first round will be played in handicap order and the following two rounds will be seeded. The Match Committee is trialling having the leading contenders in the final round playing at the back of the field instead of at the start. This will enable any interested members who wish to watch what I’m sure will be excellent golf from the leaders over the last few holes. Members, who wish to play on any of these days, but not in the Championship, are asked to place their name on the list in the old clubhouse. You will then be placed on the timesheet after the Championship field.

Pennant Dinner: April 16 This is the date of the final round of Pennant and all members are welcome to come and help the players and caddies celebrate. Remember Anne Stephens is collecting the money and dinner selections.

Guest Day: April 20 The timesheets are on the noticeboard in the old clubhouse. I would encourage all members to consider asking a guest to play on either of our two great courses. Although there will be no competition for members without guests, if you wish to play on the day and have lunch please place your name on the provided sheet and if there is room, you will be included on the timesheet.

The Dunes Bowl: April 21 It is very pleasing that we have a full field competing for our Challenge Bowl.

Caddies Day: April 23 (The Dunes) Pennant players should book their caddies in with them on the timesheet.

MPDWG HANDICAP MATCHPLAY: May 8 - June 18 The Dunes has one team entered into this competition and we are looking for players and caddies who are interested in representing our club. The games are played on either a Thursday or a Friday. You don’t have to be available to play all games and as handicap allowances are given, all members would be able to compete on a level basis. A list on which to place your name if interested, as well as the draw, is on the noticeboard. It would be pleasing to see lots of names!!!

MPDWG District Foursomes Championship: June 26 at Sorrento GC Entries open on April 20 and entry forms may be found in the Purple folder in the old clubhouse.

I hope everybody had a safe and happy Easter.

Happy Golfing

ASK ALISON:

Alison has been asked by the editors to answer specific golf rules as they come up in play. If you have a rule you want clarified please forward your question to Alison, Anne or Sandra.

1.  When do you drop within one club-length, and when it is two?

The simplest way to remember is that if you have free relief (you are not having to add a penalty stroke to your score), then you are allowed one club-length, whereas if you are taking a penalty drop the Rules generously allow you to take up to two club-lengths.

The two Rules that give you free relief (so one club-length) are

a. Rule 25.1 Abnormal Ground Conditions: this includes GUR (ground under repair), casual water (a puddle of water outside a water hazard) or a hole made by a "burrowing animal ,reptile or bird". At The Dunes this is most likely to be a rabbit scrape, with poo in evidence.

b. Rule 24.2 Immovable Obstructions: an obstruction is something artificial like a post, a hose, signs etc. See the Local Rules on the back of your scorecard for details.

In these cases you must find the Nearest Point of Relief from whatever the problem is, and drop your ball within one club length of that point. Your ball can roll up to two club lengths from where you dropped it but unless it is then closer to the hole than your original position, play it from there. If necessary drop it again.

The main Rule at The Dunes that gives you two club lengths is Rule 28 - Ball Unplayable. You cannot get free relief if your ball is too close to a tree, or in tall grass, because these are not artificial. You may use the Unplayable rule anywhere on the course that you choose. You may drop your ball, adding a penalty stroke, within two club lengths, but there are other options – see page 102 of the Rules of Golf. (When you play at other courses you need to know about the water hazard rules but that’s another story.)

2.  How many times may you play your provisional ball?

You may continue to play your provisional until you are past where you think your original ball will be. So if your original shot was 00 metres from the tee you may play your provisional till you get to about there. You may, and should, play a "provisional" whenever you think your ball may be lost or out of bounds. You must

tell your playing partners what you are doing - it is either a "provisional" or "the ball in play". You do not have to search for your original ball but if it is found you must use it. You are not allowed to use your "provisional" just because the first, once found, isn't nice. The penalty for "lost" or OOB balls is "stroke and distance" so your provisional will score "3 off the tee" (or "4 off the fairway" for a

second shot), if it becomes the ball in play.

Please contact me or the editors if you have any rules questions. Recent Rules and Handicapping stories on the Dunes website have been about Cheating, Lightning, the Flagstick and Online Rules sites.
