A Brief Bio of Kingdom Uchenna Nwanyanwu

Kingdom Uchenna Nwanyanwu is a Young African Leader from Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He is the Founder and President of Dehat Ability Support Initiative (DASI), a nonprofit organization that promotes the welfare of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in Nigeria and also provide mentorship programs for teenagers.

Mr. Nwanyanwu studied Accountancy, both at Bachelors and Master’s level. He is a prestigious Mandela Washington Fellow selected by the U.S. Government. He was among the 7 Young African Leaders invited to undertake an Immersion Program at Gallaudet University, Washington D.C. U.S.A. As a Mandela Washington Fellow, he proceeded to Wagner College in New York City where he studied Civic Leadership.During his study in New York City, he had the privilege of attending various workshops and roundtable meetings at various organizations such as: the United Nations Headquarters in New York; Carnegie Corporation of New York; Generation Citizens in Manhattan; Lifestyle for the Disabled; Irondale Theater in Brooklyn; and many more. He also participated in the “Young African ConneXions Summit” at Howard University, Washington D.C which was organized by the Mayor of the District of Columbia(D.C.).

He was again selected for a Professional Development Experience (PDE), a highly competitive opportunity. Under the auspices of U.S Department of State, he is currently gaining professional leadership experience at Gallaudet University, Washington D.C. The on-going PDE program is geared toward helping him improve his American Sign Language (ASL) Skills, improve his knowledge of Deaf Culture, learn best leadership practices in Deaf Education at various levels, while striving to build relationships with U.S-based NGOs whose works are connected with the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Teenagers.

As an Activist for the right of persons living with disability, he usesDASI as a platform to promote the right of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. He is a Frontline fighter against stigmatization of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing people. His organization provides free training in basic communication skills in American Sign Language (ASL) for Deaf. To help them fight loneliness, he creates a world around them by teaching their family members and other interested persons the ASL. This helpsto ease communication problems. DASI also organizes skill building and empowermentprograms for the deaf.

As a Peer Education Trainer, Mr. Nwanyanwumentors teenager to become Peer Educators, leaders and role models. His mentorship programs border on psycho-active substance/drug abuse,sex education, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS prevention and care, public speaking, and civic leadership.
