AReading Log includes: the date, amount of time read, parent initials. There are no errorsin spelling or punctuation. Entry is thoroughly and completely done.

BReading log has parent initials, but is missing other pertinent information. Reading log is clearly written. There are one or two errors in punctuation.

CReading log is missing parent initials, but has date, amount of time read. Reading log is clearly written. There are mistakes in punctuation. Responses are dull and paragraph is not cohesive.

F Very little effort was used and/or log is blank.

Directions:People who read the most, read the best. The more you read and think about what you are reading, the better reader you become. In addition, when you write about something you read, thinking and writing skills improve.

You are required to read every week. You may read articles online, a chapter book, a nonfiction book, a recipe book. You are intelligent human beings. Self-select something that interests you and read it. You must record the date, title, your time reading (in total minutes). Reading on the weekend is not required but it is encouraged. Some weeks, you may read an entire chapter book (HOORAY!). Other weeks, you’ll have ten thousand and two things to do, so all you may read is four pages. That’s okay. I want you to develop the habit of being a lifelong reader, and NOT a reader that just reads for school. Reading for this task IS homework. This means you cannot include any reading that occurs during school hours, and it also should not include reading for another class that is done for homework.

Summary: Include a BRIEFsummary of what you’ve read. Assume I’ve not read what you’re reading. Provide enough detail so I can understand.

Response: Include a response to what you are reading.

Below are possible suggestions (choose one):

Write about a time in your life that this book reminds you of (Text to Self, T-S)

Write about how it connects to another book or story you know (Test to Text, T-T)

Write about a problem that is happening in the world which is similar to a problem in the book (Text to World, T-W)

Write about a character/event/situation you like, or don’t like, and tell exactly why you feel that way.

Give your opinion or review of this book, or part of the book. Give support for your opinion.

If it’s a non-fiction book, give a couple of interesting facts you have learned.

If it’s a non-fiction book, tell why you wanted to read this and why you’re interested in the subject.

How to complete your Reading Log:

1. Fill in each line: Date (month/day), Title of the book (remember to underline titles and capitalize the important words), Time read (total minutes you’ve read). If you didn’t read, write: Did not read.

2. Write your paragraph at the bottom of the page or type it on a separate sheet of paper. Remember to write neatly and use correct spelling. Use a dictionary or ask a teacher or parent if you don’t know how to spell a word. Use the book cover to spell the title correctly. Please write in complete sentences and make it interesting to read!

3. Once a week have your parent or guardian initial your writing assignment. Talk with your parent/guardian about what you are reading!

4. Reading Logs are due each Monday.

5. Keep your reading log in a safe place.
