God’s creation of light, in the mosaic at Monreale Cathedral in Sicily,

is here figured as the creation of the angels on the first day.

Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.

And God saw that the light was good; and

God separated the light from the darkness.

Genesis 1:3

The Sunday called Septuagesima

Opening Hymn: 369All people that on earth do dwell

Worship continues on page 1 of the liturgy booklets.

The Collect:O LORD, we beseech you favourably to hear the prayers of your people; that we, who are justly punished for our offences, may be mercifully delivered by your goodness, for the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end.Amen.

Old Testament Reading:Genesis 1:1-5

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 9:10-20

2nd part

10 And they that know thy Name will put their ’ trust in ’ thee : for thou Lord hast never ’ failed them that ’ seek thee.

11 O praise the Lord which ’ dwelleth in ’ Sion : shew the ’ people ’ of his ’ doings.

12 For when he maketh inquisition for blood, he re’membereth ’ them : and forgetteth not the com’plaint ’ of the ’ poor.

13 Have mercy upon me O Lord, consider the trouble which I suffer of ’ them that ’ hate me : thou that liftest me up ’ from the ’ gates of ’ death.

14 That I may shew all thy praises within the ports of the ’ daughter of ’ Sion : I will re’joice in ‘ thy sal’vation.

15 The heathen are sunk down in the pit ’ that they ’ made : in the same net which they hid privily ’ is their ’ foot ’ taken.

16 The Lord is known to ’ execute ’ judgement : the ungodly is trapped in the ’ work of his ’ own ’ hands.

17 The wicked shall be turned ’ into ’ hell : and all the people ’ that for’get ’ God.

2ndpart

18 For the poor shall not always ’ be for’gotten : the patient abiding of the meek ’ shall not ’ perish for ’ ever.

19 Up Lord, and let not man have the ’ upper ’ hand : let the heathen be ’ judg-ed ’ in thy ’ sight.

20 Put them in ’ fear O ’ Lord : that the heathen may

know them-’selves to ’ be but ’ men.

Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost;

As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’— ’ men.

New Testament Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 423Fight the good fight

Gospel Acclamation:

I am the Light of the world ’ says the ’ Lord.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will ’ have the • light of ’ life.

The Gospel: St Matthew 20:1-16

Before the Gospel we sing: Glory to you, O Lord

The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord

After the Gospel we sing: Praise to you, O Christ

Sermon: Mr Tjeerd Bijl
