2Job purpose

To provide an expert knowledge based support service to members, covering all aspects of membership and professional development.
To actively promote IOSH membership and professional development processes.
To own and manage individual projects aimed at consolidating and developing the IOSH membership function, as required.

3Key result areas

  1. To achieve a defined minimum number of members through the IPD process to Chartered status each year by providing expert knowledge and support on a one to one basis throughout the process, ensuring the support tools used and recommended meet the members’ individual requirements.
  2. To attend Peer Review Interviews (PRI) at the Grange and off site on a regular basis to provide administration support to the PRI Panel Chair and ensure corporate standards are met.
  3. To deliver presentations and workshops at events and business meeting on a regular basis to promote IOSH membership and share best practice in IPD and CPD.
  4. To write event and meeting reports for external activities, focussing on successful outcomes and opportunities for development.
  5. To assess qualificationand experience information provided by members each week against the IOSH membership structure and provide recommendations for transfer to a different category of membership based on that assessment.
  6. To use a combination of well developed communication skills and in-depth knowledge to identify issuesand barriers to progression for members assigned to the Membership Development Adviser (MDA) for support.
  7. To achieve an improved compliance rate for CPD in recognised members using a proactive approach to changing their perceptions and habits surrounding professional development.
  8. To achieve success in assigned projects, such as revenue generation, process development and volunteer development, by being proactive and aiming to achieve agreed activity deadlines, working in partnership with the Team Leaders.
  9. To use target and goal achievementto report regularly to the HMD through the Team Leaders to assist in decisions for further activities.
  10. To manipulate IOSH membership data to support ongoing membership activities and members connection to their Institution including preparing data for retention and membership development purposes.
  11. To undertake business critical activities including the production of renewal and reminder data through the manipulation of membership data.
  12. To carry out any reasonable duties within the remit of the role.

4Qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills and training

Qualifications:
  • A minimum of 5 GCSE grade C or above including Maths and English Language (or equivalent) – essential
  • ‘A’ level or equivalent standard of education - essential
  • Degree in a relevant discipline - desirable
Experience:
  • Experience of communicating complex concepts via telephone, face to face and in written format – essential
  • Experience of presenting to large and small audiences using PowerPoint or other presentation tools – essential
  • Experience of successfully delivering to identified targets with minimum supervision – essential
  • Experience of communicating with people at all levels in business – desirable
  • Experience of working without direct supervision outside of the normal office environment – desirable
  • Experience of using multi relational databases – desirable
  • Experience of dealing with people to gain a desired result on business development activities, including working with events suppliers, media and collaterals - desirable
Knowledge:

5Job context

The job-holder is responsible for working with different groups of people within IOSH and externally to provide high quality support and control for members joining IOSH and going through professional development.
The job-holder will be required to oversee the activities of small groups of volunteer members on a regular basis both at The Grange and off site.
The job-holder is required to communicate with a diverse range of individuals professionally to achieve a standardised service for all members.
The job-holder will be required to manipulate and extract large amounts of data. The job-holder is required to have an in-depth knowledge of membership structures and processes.
The job-holder will be required to represent IOSH and present the benefits of membership to a wide variety of people at different levels in multiple situations. This may include extensive travel and overnights stays.

6Job dimensions

The role is a member of the Membership team responsible for carrying our regular internal and external activities that underpin the efficiency of the process of gaining, retaining and managing members.
The job-holder will be communicating with thousands of members throughout the year on a transitory basis. The job-holder will communicate with up to 300 active members at any one time going through IPD, building 1-2-1 relationships for the time it takes them to successfully complete the process.
The job-holder will give presentations promoting IOSH membership and values to members and non members, such as senior managers in organisations,universities and colleges.
The job-holder will regularly attend industry events and IOSH networking events where they will be expected to present to audiences and have 1-2-1 discussions about all IOSH membership activities, with a view to persuading individuals to join IOSH, take part in key activities such as Workplace Shadowing or join IOSH registers, as well as providing support and guidance on professional development when requested.
The job-holder will be expected to keep their own activity records, write reports and provide the Team Leaders with relevant, useful information on a regular basis as requested.
The job holder will be expected to work to identified targets for members successful completion of IPD and CPD operating with the support of the Team Leaders and calling on the support of the HMD as required.

7Complexity and creativity

The job-holder will be required to maintain sufficient breadth and depth of knowledge of the processes of IOSH membership within the remit of their responsibility to ensure members join and move through the structure effectively.
The job holder will be expected to use their knowledge and experience of delivering support services to members and development presentations to provide insight for development projects that they are involved with as well as share their knowledge and experience freely in meetings and development sessions.
The job-holder will be required to multi-task across the full range of membership duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the department and that tasks are completed in a timely manner.
The job-holder will be expected to work to identified targets for members’ successful completion of IPD and CPD, operating with the support of team leaders and calling on the support of the HMD as required.

8Decision making

Whilst the job-holder will have the support of the management team they will be required to work without close supervision onindividual projectsdeciding on the best course of action to ensure that project plans and targets are met, requesting the support when necessary.
For example the job-holder will;
  • work individually on projects liaising with members of other internal teams and only independently calling on a team leader or HMD for support when issues cannot be resolved or project deadlines are endangered.
The job-holder will be required to decide on the best course of action for members going through the membership structure using the support of the HMD and team leaders only when the way forward for the member is not clear.
For example the job-holder will;
  • decide what category of membership to recommend a member to and advise on further qualifications. The Team Leader or HMD will only become involved if the member is unhappy and the issue cannot be resolved in clarification of the structure and process for development.
  • decide on the best route forward for encouraging a member to complete the professional process (IPD or CPD) based on their interpretation of the information gathered from the member. The Team Leader or HMD will only become involved when the lack of progress puts member is at risk of being reported to the PEC and therefore could lose membership status.
The job-holder will be working independently, often off site, presenting IOSH, its products and services to a variety of people without the opportunity to refer to the HMD and at times negotiating a package of membership and benefits for that business within defined parameters.

9Key internal and external contacts

Internal contacts
The job-holder will have regular contact with team leaders and team members within the Membership Division to co-ordinate activities, provide advice and assistance on matters relating to their areas of responsibility, for example Network Officer and Membership Administrators.
The job holder will have regular contact with individuals in other divisions to co-ordinate opportunities for membership development, member communications and exploit commercial opportunities.
External contacts
The job- holder may have contact with a range of external suppliers and stakeholders dependent on the project activities they undertake. Key external contacts may be:
