Explanatory notes

1This unit standard is intended for those who work in an assisting role with children.

2An early childhood education (ECE) service may include a centre-based service, hospital-based service, or home-based service. The home-based service may be nominated by the child’s parent, be the child’s own home, or the home of the educator.

Evidence of onetype of service is required in this unit standard.

3The programme must be relevant to a specified PacificIsland nominated by the candidate and agreed by the assessor. The PacificIsland programme must be in accordance with culturally appropriate practices for the specified PacificIsland within a New Zealand ECEservice.

4Three 'broad age groups' are defined in Te Whāriki for children. These are overlapping age categories and aredefined as:

infant – birth to 18 months;

toddler – one year to three years;

young child – two and a half years to school entry age.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Contribute to the identification of learning styles and learning outcomes for a specified Pacific Island ECE programme.

Evidence requirements

1.1Contribution to identificationof learning styles is in accordance with culturally appropriate values and practices for the specified PacificIsland.

1.2Contribution to identification of learning outcomes is in accordance with the traditions and practices for the specified PacificIsland.

1.3Contribution to identification of learning outcomes is in accordance with the requirements of the ECE service.

Outcome 2

Contribute to the development of a PacificIsland cultural programme for an ECEservice.

Evidence requirements

2.1Contributions are in accordance with culturally appropriate values, practices, and traditions for the specified PacificIsland.

2.2Contributions identify specific language and cultural resources required to meet children’s learning requirements.

Rangeevidence of one child or one age category.

2.3Contributions are in accordance with the specified PacificIsland cultural programme’s learning outcomes.

2.4Contributions to the documentation of the PacificIsland cultural programme are in accordance with the requirements of the ECE service.

Outcome 3

Contribute to the implementation of the PacificIsland cultural programme in an ECE service.

Evidence requirements

3.1Contribution to the implementation of the programme is in accordance with the requirements of the ECE service.

3.2Contribution to the implementation of the programme is in accordance with culturally appropriate values, practices, and traditions for the specified PacificIsland.
