21st Century Oncology of Las Vegas Introduces Lung Cancer Fighting Technology

Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy promises fewer treatments, greater accuracy and better outcomes for lung cancer patients

LAS VEGAS – Nov. 13, 2013 - November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and 21st Century Oncology of Las Vegas, part of the nation’s premier cancer treatment network, is announcing a new, shorter radiation therapy option for selected types of lung cancer. It is called Varian® RapidArc® Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) and it treats tumors in less than three minutes over one to five sessions, instead of six to eight weeks of treatment.

SBRT is a type of radiation therapy that combines extremely accurate image-guided tumor targeting with exact patient positioning. This allows higher doses of radiation to be delivered in fewer treatment sessions. The sessions are pain-free and require no sedation, so patients can return to their normal activities right away.

“Because of the pinpoint accuracy of this technology, SBRT can deliver higher doses of targeted radiation in fewer treatment sessions, minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue,” says Brian Lawenda, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist and 21st Century Oncology of Las Vegas Medical Director. “For qualifying lung cancer patients, this treatment may better fit their needs.”

SBRT treatments are delivered under image guidance, allowing the team to see any movements in the tumor and adjust the radiation beams as needed. The treatment machines can even adjust for the motion of a patient’s breathing, a technique called respiratory gating. The goal is to deliver an effective dosage that is so precisely targeted that it only affects cancerous cells and leaves the healthy tissue surrounding the tumor untouched.

In addition to lung cancer, SBRT is also effective in treating cancers of the liver and prostate.
