20thSunday in ordinary time

Is 56:1, 6-7/Rom 11:13-15, 29-32/Mt 15:21-28

“The foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, ministering to him, loving the name of the Lord, and becoming his servants – all who keep the Sabbath free from profanation and hold to my covenant, them I will bring to my holy mountain and make joyful in my house of prayer… ‘Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.’”

We might be tempted to consider the scripture today as an interesting story for two groups who were not of the chosen people or elect. Somehow God would incorporate the foreigners, and the woman from the north, into His plan.

Are these not great passages to reflect upon as we consider the church in our country? At a time when some choose to walk away from the Lord, for whatever reason, our church is being enriched and revitalized by the presence of countless newcomers, immigrants, building the body of Christ with us.

We are blessed with ministers, priests and religious, coming to serve our communities. We thank God for the gift of their presence and generosity. As we look around our church, others join us in worship. They come to participate in our community, and they come as church from their rich traditions and experience of their native countries. Some have different customs of prayers, a novena or devotion. Some employ different music or languages. Some have been leaders in their respective communities, teaching, serving as catechists, exercising ministries. All have a hunger for the Lord and can contribute to the richness of our community.

Take a moment. Welcome someone you don’t know into the circle of your faith life. You will be the beneficiary.

Did you know that the St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen serves 400 people every week?

Would like to be a part of this great organization?

It’s simple, just come any Saturday to Caserly Hall, right around the corner from the main Church. You can volunteer for the meal prep shift, which begins at 10am or for the serving shift at 1pm. You might like it so much you’ll stay for both!

If you have any questions or would like more information, please email

Dear Friends,
I want to thank you for your generosity this summer. Every other summer our financial health was so bad that we have "held our breath" trying to get through August with many bills having to be paid in September. That is not so this year.
Our weekly income is, however, still below what a parish of this size should be receiving. If the more than 500 persons who put a dollar in the collection were to increase their giving to $5 weekly, our collection would increase by $2,000!
So, please consider increasing your level of giving, if you have yet to do so. Remember, "the Lord loves a
cheerful giver!"

Sunday School

It is not too early to consider introducing your child to God by enrolling in our Sunday School Program. Our children meet for their age appropriate treatment of the Sunday Scriptures and after Mass, continue to learn more of the Catholic Faith.

Anyone interested in participating in the program should contact Thom Sabatelli for more detailed information and/or registration forms. They can either email him at

Or call 1-917-602-1224. This will help us get an early start on estimating registers for each age group. Sunday School will resume in late September
