AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE THE SPARTANBURG HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM AND ITS FINE COACHES ON THEIR IMPRESSIVE WIN OF THE 2014 CLASS AAAA DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, supremely ready for the challenge, the Spartanburg High School football team drove past York4928 to capture the 2014 Class AAAA Division II State Championship, held on Saturday, December 6, 2014; and

Whereas, WilliamsBrice Stadium in Columbia echoed with the cheers of exuberant Spartanburg fans, pleased to see their confident predictions of victory realized as a satisfying end to an excellentseason. By the end of the title game, the Vikings’ many admirers were already looking with anticipation toward a repeat performance next year; and

Whereas, such victories do not come overnight; they take determination and hard work. With proven consistency in both, Coach Chris Miller and his dedicated staff have built their football program into a championship teamdetermined not to settle for second best; and

Whereas, it was the first state championship for the Vikings since 2001 and the seventh in school history. It was also their ninth straight victory. Further, the title win gave Coach Miller, now in his second year at Spartanburg, the fifth state championship of his career; and

Whereas, during the game, York took a 70 lead on its opening possession. The Vikings answered on their third possession as junior quarterback Austin Scott connected on a 69yard touchdown pass to Tavien Feaster to make it 77 with 5:46 left in the first quarter. The Cougars immediately answered, scoring from a yard out to take a 147 lead into the second quarter; and

Whereas, Spartanburg got the offense in gear with 21 points in the second quarter. It pulled within 1413 as senior Shrine Bowl selection Cedarius Rookard scored on an acrobatic onehanded 58yard touchdown catch from Scott with 8:53 left in the half; and

Whereas, the Vikings put it away after Feaster scored his second rushing touchdownto make the score 4221 with 9:26 left. Feaster also had an interception on the Cougars’ final possession to seal the win. It set up a 4yard touchdown run by Eli Jackson with 50 seconds remaining in regulation; and

Whereas, the Vikings have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community, and the members of the House of Representatives are pleased to have this opportunity to recognize such an outstanding group of young athletes. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate the Spartanburg High School football team and its fine coaches on their impressive win of the 2014 Class AAAA Division II State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Jeff Stevens and Coach Chris Millerof Spartanburg High School.
