2011 Saguaro National Park BioBlitz

Field Datasheet Instructions

Please use a separate sheet for each collection site.

(1)  Activity Leader. Enter the activities leader’s name.

(2)  Primary Taxa. Indicate the primary taxa for the inventory (e.g. small mammals, crickets, songbirds, etc.).

(3)  Date Observed. Check the date of the observation (either 10/21/2011 or 10/22/2011).

(4)  Time Slot. Indicate the time slot of your inventory and circle the time of day (AM or PM).

(5)  Inventory Location. Enter the park place name where you are conducting the inventory (refer to the park map, e.g. Section 17, Madrona Ranger Station, Wasson Peak).

(6)  Location Description. Describe, in detail, the location where you are conducting the inventory (e.g. from visitor center parking lot, 5 miles north on main trail).

(7)  Sampling Method. Enter the sampling method used for the inventory (e.g. line transect).

(8)  Species Information. For each organism observed at a particular site within the sampling unit, please provide the following information:

a.  Scientific or Common Name. Enter the scientific or common name of the organism. If you use codes, you MUST turn in clear code definitions as well.

b.  Qty Observed. Indicate the actual count of organisms observed or use the relative abundance categories listed in the field.

c.  Coordinates. If you are using a GPS, record the exact GPS location of where the organism was observed.

1.  Indicate the coordinate system of the GPS unit.

2.  Coordinates may be written down on the datasheet or collected as a waypoint (refer to your GPS user manual on how to do this).

d.  Maps. Indicate if location of the observation was recorded on the map provided.

e.  Evidence. Indicate the type of evidence verifying this organism. Check all which apply.

1.  For (O): The visual observation of an organism.

2.  For (S): The collection of an organism as supporting evidence of the observation.

3.  For (P): A digital photograph of the observation; ensure to capture attributes of the species that will facilitate identification.

4.  Specimen Catalog Number. If a specimen or photo is taken record your personal specimen catalog number for record management.

f.  Comments. Additional comments on the organism(s).

(9)  General Comments. If there are any additional comments regarding the inventory, please indicate them at the bottom of the datasheet.

(10)  Data Entry By. Enter the name of the person entering the data into the database.

•  PLEASE TURN IN DATA SHEETS TO DATA ENTRY STATIONS: Tucson Mountain District: 1) Science Tent Visitor Center 2) Signal Hill (Friday Only) Rincon Mountain District: 1) Resource Building 2) SAGU Fire Building (Friday Only) 3) Academy Village (Friday Only) - as soon as reasonably possible and definitely by the end of BioBlitz 2011.

1)  your data sheets will be copied and a copy returned to you

2)  your photos will be downloaded (we will have multi-photo card readers)

3)  please let us know of any “special” finds, i.e. new, exciting, or unusual species for the park, cool photos you may have taken so we can share them with the public on the big screen TVs.

4)  your data will be entered and your species found will be added to the species counts

5)  copies of the entered data will be emailed to you after BioBlitz for you to check (QA/QC)

If for some reason you cannot turn in your data sheets by the end of BioBlitz please call 520-403-1084 or mail them to Kristen Beaupre, c/o National Park Service, 7660 E. Broadway Blvd Suite 303, Tucson, AZ 85710.

This standard operating procedure (SOP) describes data standard for the 2011 SAGU BioBlitz scientist. This will ensure data is collected and received in a standardized manor to expedite data entry and all required data has been recorded.

Data Standards

Please ensure:

1.  If you use codes out in the field, before you turn your datasheet in please write in the full Latin name or common name next to the code.

2.  The GPS unit is set to collect coordinates in UTM Zone 12.

3.  If you take a photo please record the observation on the datasheet and record the photo number.

4.  If you record location information via the map; please record on the map the unique datasheet and observation number.

5.  If they collected specimens ensure you have the curation forms and documentation.
