2007 STATE OF SCHOOL REPORT BY NZEMEKA E. OLISAH, PRINCIPAL

CHRIST THE KINGCOLLEGE, (C. K. C) ONITSHA

TARGET AUDIENCE: OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION OF THE COLLEGE

I greet you all in the name of the Lord. It is with deep joy and a thankful heart that I once again present to you the 2007 STATE OF THE SCHOOL REPORT. In this edition, I shall update the activities in our great alma mater from July 2007 to June 2008. The report will, in my usual pattern be presented in two parts viz:

  • The Journey so far
  • Proposals for the future

A. THE JOURNEY SO FAR

Discipline: We have continued to make substantial progress in our effort to make our students imbibe discipline. I am glad to say that our efforts in making our students acquire good morals have continued to yield more positive results. This is seen from the encomium showered on the principal and staff of the college by the general public. Also many students who have graduated from the school and have been enrolled into tertiary institutions have come to realize the all-important role which the school, authority played in shaping their lives for the better. Hence, some of them have been expressing their gratitude to the school through various ways. Some even ask for the opportunity to talk to the present students on the need to heed to the advice of the school authority and always obey school rules and regulations for their own good.

Nevertheless, an Igbo adage has it that, “there is no fence/wall without lizards”. This goes to show that there are still some recalcitrant students who occasionally exhibit one form of undesirable behaviour or the other. Depending on the nature or magnitude of the offence, the following forms of punishment are given to serve as corrective measure or deterrent to others:-

The offenders are given manual labour

Those of them who are suspended for a definite period are asked to report to the school with their parents at the expiration of the suspension to write a letter of undertaking which will be countersigned by the parents.

Again, in an attempt to close the gap between the school and their homes, we have sensitised the parents to give us reports of their children’s behaviour, especially the day students. This approach is also yielding good results. Moreover, because of the large population and the difficulty in identifying the students, we have directed them to neatly print their names in full on the collars of their shirts and on their trousers. This measure has drastically reduced indiscipline among the students and pilfering school uniform from the boarding house.

The present high tone of the school has resulted to parents from all over AnambraState and beyond being eager to get their children/wards admitted into C. K. C.

(ii.) ACADEMICS

I must say that we have continued to try our best to see that the academic life of the students is high so that they will have quality results in both their internal and external examinations. However, the task is made more complex by the fact that at least 80% of the students come from educationally and financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Hence, many of them lack the necessary textbooks and other materials needed to enhance academic work.

These hindrances not withstanding, a comparative analysis of 2006 and 2007 WASSCE results shows that there was a remarkable improvement in 2007 in the following subjects: English Language, Igbo Language, Agricultural Science, Literature-in-English, Chemistry, Economics and Government.

We hope that we shall continue to improve on the existing situation (see Appendix A and B).

(iii.) ANNUAL MOTIVATIONAL AWARD

The Annual Motivational Award sponsored by the C. K. C. A-A-A for 2007 had taken place. It was held during a P. T. A meeting on 21st of May, 2008. There was an impressive turn out of parents for the meeting. They witnessed the award-giving ceremony. They were highly delighted with the Motivational Award and very much commended the Old Boys A-A-A for their thoughtfulness. The recipients themselves were not left out in the joy of the day and prayed that the merciful God will continue to bless the C. K. C A-A-A for their magnamity and king gestures aimed at promoting excellence.

ON-GOING PROJECTS IN THE SCHOOL

(i.) SCHOOL GATE: May I, on behalf of the staff, students and parents of our dear alma mater, express our profound gratitude to your branch, C. K. C-AAA for the beautiful work done to give the college a new and highly prestigious gate. This project, which has so far caused the branch, about 2.8 Million Naira, has reached over ninety percent completion, leaving work on the fence yet to be completed.

(ii.) THE FLAG BUILDINGS (BLOCKS A and B)

The external walls of BLOCKS A and B are being repainted by the Abuja Branch in the school colours of white and blue. The job so far done and the new gate have greatly improved the aesthetic value of the school. It is hoped that Abuja Branch will promptly complete this project in readiness to hosting the 75th Anniversary Grand Finale scheduled to hold in November, 2008.

(iii.) LIBRARY/ADMINISTRATIVE BLOCK (BLOCK E)

This project is now being completed by Enugu Branch. The project which has lasted for about twenty years has enjoyed the sponsorship of the P. T. A, C. K. C.- AAA, Enugu Branch and the Anambra State Government at various stages of the work. Presently, work is going on at the site and the Enugu Branch handling it is optimistic that the project will be completed in July 2008.

THE WAY FORWARD

We have been yearning to regain our primus status in AnambraState in particular and the nation as a whole. Our frantic effort to realize this aspiration has not been without tremendous results. The development of infrastructure in the college has been quite encouraging. As we laud you for your immense and selfless contributions to the all round development of the college, I deem it worthwhile to point out the following areas that yet need to be attended to:

EROSION CONTROL: As previously mentioned, the roads and most of the drainages are still in very deplorable condition. This calls for the attention of all Old Boys. It is not an over-statement if one says that erosion has eaten off much of the surface layer of the school soil and therefore calls for serious check.

CONCLUSION:

BONITAS, I thank the God Almighty for the efforts of the majority of our Old Boys to see that our alma mater, the great citadel of learning, East of the Niger, maintains its primus status. I sincerely commend the Old Boys who have in one way or the other contributed to the progress so far made. A good number of our graduands have continued their educational pursuits in various tertiary institutions in the country and beyond.

Finally, I wish you all journey mercies as you come for the 75th Anniversary of the College in November.

MAY THE FAME OF OUR COLLEGE LAST FOREVER.

BONITAS, DISCIPLINA, SCIENTIA.
