A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF LIEUTENANT RANDY G. GERALD OF LORIS, AN HORRY COUNTY DEPUTY SHERIFF AND SUPERVISOR AT THE J. REUBEN LONG DETENTION CENTER, UPON HIS TRAGIC DEATH ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2001, AS A RESULT OF STOPPING TO ASSIST TWO CARS ON HIS WAY HOME AFTER WORK.

Whereas, the members of the of General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death on Saturday, December 29, 2001, of Lt. Randy G. Gerald of Loris; and

Whereas, Lt. Gerald was a supervisor at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center and a fifteen-year veteran of the Horry County Sheriff’s Department; and

Whereas, while in route home from work at the detention center Randy Gerald stopped to assist two cars in a parking lot along U.S. Highway 701; and

Whereas, the occupants of the cars were engaged in a domestic dispute, and one of the occupants shot and killed Lt. Gerald in a senseless act of violence; and

Whereas, Randy Gerald was known throughout Horry County as a hardworking and compassionate law enforcement officer who was respected by all those with whom he came into contact. He was without question a wonderful human being; and

Whereas, after graduating from high school, he served his country in the United States Army from which he was honorably discharged before becoming a law enforcement officer; and

Whereas, he is survived by his wife of twenty-nine years, Gwendolyn Gerald, who was his high school sweetheart, two daughters, his mother, and many other family members and friends; and

Whereas, with the death of this fine man at the age of forty-seven, the people of Loris and Horry County have lost an outstanding law enforcement officer, a well-respected community leader, and a good friend. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly express their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Lieutenant Randy G. Gerald of Loris, an Horry County Deputy Sheriff and Supervisor at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center, upon his tragic death on Saturday, December 29, 2001, as a result of stopping to assist two cars on his way home after work.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Mrs. Gwendolyn Gerald.
