A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE SONNY DUBOSE OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA ENERGY OFFICE FOR HIS TIRELESS COMMITMENT TO PROJECTS WHICH WILL PROVIDE SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC BENEFIT FOR OUR STATE AND TO COMMEND HIM, IN PARTICULAR, FOR HIS EFFORTS WHICH HAVE CULMINATED IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS ENERGY OFFICE BEING NAMED “STATE ALLY OF THE YEAR” BY THE LANDFILL METHANE OUTREACH PROGRAM OF THE UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY.

Whereas, Sonny DuBose is a ninth generation South Carolinian who loves his State, its people, resources, and potential; and

Whereas, Sonny works tirelessly at the South Carolina Energy Office pursuing landfill gas utilization projects throughout the State; and

Whereas, his talent is in forming collaborative partnerships with the project stakeholders from the beginning. He has worked closely with the Department of Transportation, Public Service Commission, Department of Health and Environmental Control, local communities, public and private waste firms, engineering firms, and state electric cooperatives to ensure that landfill gas projects will be developed; and

Whereas, because of Sonny DuBose’s efforts, three landfill utilization projects, the first ones in South Carolina, are scheduled to begin operation in June 2001. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the utilization of landfill gases and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from these three landfill projects could heat as many as fifty-five thousand homes, or save the equivalent of one hundred fifty thousand barrels of oil per year. This environmental benefit is equivalent to removing thirty-five thousand cars from South Carolina’s roads or planting forty-eight thousand trees each year; and

Whereas, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program has named South Carolina and the South Carolina Energy Office as the “State Ally of the Year”, largely based on Sonny DuBose’s dedication to his job and to advancing these projects; and

Whereas, it is fitting that the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize the hard work and achievements of one of its state employees who has brought national recognition to our State in his chosen field of energy conservation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the General Assembly recognize Sonny DuBose of the South Carolina Energy Office for his tireless commitment to projects which will provide significant environmental and economic benefit for our State and to commend him, in particular, for his efforts which have culminated in South Carolina and its Energy Office being named “State Ally of the Year” by the Landfill Methane Outreach Program of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Sonny DuBose at the South Carolina Energy Office.
