Page 12 clause 3.3:
Where it is necessary for industrial rope access systems to be used ensure that:
persons using industrial rope access should utilise work methods and have competency qualifications consistent with the Australian Rope Access Association (ARAA) ‘Industry Code for the Industrial Rope Access Method ‘
Comment: In some states availability of ARAA Rope Access Competency courses is limited and the Association’s status may be in question.
There are other Industrial Rope Access competency qualifications available, for example the internationally recognised Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA) competency scheme. This is widely recognised as ‘Industry best practice’ to the extent that there are probably more IRATA qualified rope access technicians than ARAA techniciansin Australia. The” IRATA International Code of Practice” should also be considered as a reference document and in this instance with relation to rope access competencies a more relevant document would be the “IRATA General Requirements for personnel engaged in Industrial Rope Access methods”
Copies of these documents are available on request
Impacts: Do you anticipate any potential costs or safety benefits of complying with this code that are different to current requirements in your jurisdiction? If so what are they?
Safety benefit in that the IRATA competency scheme is considered ‘world’s best practice’ with regard to Industrial Rope Access and delivers a higher quality and more controlled & coordinated training program.
A significant number of persons engaged in the arboriculture industry in Australia acquire IRATA rope access certification
