Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time C

The first reading and the Gospel this Sunday tell us of the hospitality of Abraham to the Lord’s Messengers and the hospitality of Martha and Mary to Jesus when He visited them. Abraham in the first reading gives generously to his visitors. He gave the best to those in need in a totally selfless way. He was compassionate and welcoming to his visitors. He recognised the Lord and begged, “My Lord, he said I beg you, if I find favour with you, kindly do not pass your servant by.” Like Abraham we need to recognise the Lord in those with whom we come in contact. It is as servants and with humility we offer help to those in need. In the Gospel when Jesus visited Mary and Martha both women received Him in their own way- Martha fussing around preparing a meal for Jesus and Mary just sitting listening to Him. Jesus tells us that it is Mary who has chosen the better part. Jesus wants us to have a balance in our lives. Nowadays our lives are so busy we scarcely have a moment to stop and reflect on what life itself is all about. Mary chose well; she was talking and listening to Jesus, getting closer to Him. We need to make space where we can pray and listen to the Lord and grow in His love. Sometimes we fret over many small things so let us trust in the Lord's plan who provides amply for all our needs and try to imitate Mary and choose - the better part.
