Explanatory notes

1Where local rohe are also occupied by a number of other iwi or hapū, the tangata whenua or mana whenua view will take precedence. Other iwi or hapū views should be encouraged in order to enrich and enhance understanding of key Māori concepts and practices.

2Assessment against this unit standard may include but is not limited to evidence presented in – oral presentations, visual presentations, written presentations. Where appropriate the presentation should include reference to appropriate legislation or policy statements.

Outcome 1

Explain the land records held by the Māori land court registries.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Māori land records held by the Māori land Court Registries are explained in terms of the information held, access, and tools and services available.

Rangemay include, but is not limited to: Court Minute Books; Māori Land Information System; succession orders; court services; and advisory and information services;

evidence of three required.

Outcome 2

Explain the dual record system used by the Māori Land Court.

2.2The Māori Land Information System (MLIS) is explained.

2.3Additional information also available from Land Information New Zealand is described.

Outcome 3

Explain the use of principles/values when conducting kaupapa Māori research.

3.1The use of values/principles when working on, with and/or for Māori in a research context is explained.

Rangevalues/principles may include, but are not limited to: aroha ki te tangata; he kanohi kitea; titiro, whakarongo, kōrero; manaaki ki te tangata; kia tupato; kaua e takahia te mana o te tangata and kia mahaki;

evidence of three required.
