Purpose

This national certificate is awarded to people who have demonstrated competence in the skills and knowledge required for employment as a Line Mechanic carrying out live work in the transmission sector of the electricity supply industry.

The qualification meets the requirements of NZECP 46:2003 New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice for High Voltage Live Line Work part 2 Barehand and part 3 Stick and covers the following live work using bare hand and stick techniques.

Holders of this qualification will be able to:

• Inspect, test, and clean live line tools and equipment
• Access electricity transmission lines for bare hand live work
• Demonstrate knowledge of live line theory and procedures
• Carry out short term inspections of tower structures up to line voltage live line MAD
• Install testing and measuring devices on conductors and fittings
• Displace jumpers and suspension strings on electricity supply structures
• Complete a selection of tasks in the live work environment.

This qualification contains unit standards that build on the knowledge and skills recognised by the National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Line Mechanic Transmission) (Level 4) with optional strands in Optional Work Skills (E1 (O)), and Optional De-energised Work Skills (E3) [Ref:1389].

Prerequisite: National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Line Mechanic Transmission) (Level 4) with optional strands in Optional Work Skills (E1 (O)), and Optional De-energised Work Skills (E3) [Ref:1389] or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills; and compliance with the minimum requirements of industry codes of practice for live work contained in the New Zealand Electrical Code of Practice for High Voltage Live Line Work (NZECP 46: 2003).
