Innovative Idea Award
1. Background
King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals has established a yearly “Innovative Ideas” award to recognize persons who are the proponents of outstanding innovative ideas that are expected to bring about substantial improvements in the areas of teaching, learning, research, community services, the University’s internal processes and its administrative affairs.
KFUPM will offer a maximum of three distinguished awards for KFUPM community members who have suggested creative ideas that have the potential to bring about substantial improvements in the way the University conducts its business.. The ideas will be rated as first, second, and third and the amount of the awards will be SR.10,000/-, 8,000/-, and 6,000/- respectively. Ideas rated in the same rank will get same monetary amount.
2. Eligibility
All KFUPM community members (including students, faculty, staff and their dependents) are eligible for the award.
3. Criteria
The purpose of this award is to promote the participation of the KFUPM community with innovative ideas that enhancethe main lines of business of the University,which are education, research and community service. The award will focus on the outcomes or potential outcomes of the idea. The essential elements of the award criteria include impact, feasibility, originality, effectiveness (cost and time), and transferability.The elements of the criteria are:
- Impact:refers to the level of improvements the idea will bring and whether those improvements are at the unit level, college or university-wide.
- Feasibility: refers to the possibility and the ease with which the idea can be implemented in the KFUPM environment.
- Originality: means how new or unique the idea is.
- Effectiveness: means the benefit the idea will bring and at whatcost (time and other resources).
- Transferability: means the ease of transferring the idea to similarunits or institutions.
Candidates will be evaluated using the criteria in Appendix A. If two or more members of the community submit the same winning idea, the award will be divided equally among them.
4. Submission for the Award
The Director of the Office of Planning and Quality (OPQ) will inform the KFUPM community members of the regulations and the deadline for applications for the yearly innovative idea award. All members of the community shall submit their ideas to the OPQ for evaluation. The OPQ will request documentation for the idea/s in the format given in Appendix B, and it will screen the idea/s to check for its/their completeness and eligibility. All candidates' names should be coded and only code numbers and information about the ideas shall be forwarded to the selection committee.All proponents submitting ideas surrender their rights to the University for utilizing them to improve KFUPM operations and functions.
5. Procedure for Selection
The Director of the OPQ shall appoint a five-member selection committee from the University after the award closing date. The committee shall compriseexperienced members of the community. Competing members or those who have dependents or relatives competing for the award shall not be members in the selection committee. The deliberations of the committee are confidential. The committee may use the expertise of other individuals if needed. After obtaining all the relevant information from the Director of the OPQ, the committeeshall conduct a blind review of the cases received and apply the criteria in Appendix A. The committee shall select five candidates (in order of merit) as the nominees for the award. The committee, using the forms in AppendicesC andD shall report the results, including codes for the candidates, scorers with justification; (in order of merit) etc, and forward them to the Director of the OPQwho in turn shall forward them to the Chairman of the Committee on Convocation, Honors and Public Events.
5. Feedback
The Director of OPQ will inform all proponentsabout the final decision of the award evaluation committee. These decisions are final and can not be contested by the proponents. Proponents of non-winningbut effective ideas,which worth being adopted or implemented by the concerned Departments/Units,may provide their consent to the OPQ to forward their ideas to the related department(s).
Appendix A
Criteria for the Innovative Idea Award
The criteria consist of the elements detailed in the following table. Ten is the highest score is 10 and 1 is the lowest.

Idea Documentation
The candidates are asked to submit documentation of their ideas in the giventemplate format (page 7):
- Candidate's name and contact information
- Name of university employee related to the candidate if he/she is not an employee.

- Feasibility.

Originality
Assert that your idea is original and has not been proposed or implemented before. Describe how your idea is different from similar existing ideas.
Impact
How many people will your idea affect? e.g. household, neighborhood, department, campus wide, etc.
Feasibility
Can the idea be implemented? How easy is it to implement the idea? And how long will it take to successfully implement it?
Effectiveness
Does the idea solve the problem it is intended to solve? How well does it solve it? Is the cost of implementing the idea justified, in terms of time as well as financial cost?
Transferability
How easy is it to implement the idea in other departments or institutes than the one(s) it was intended for?

Declaration:
Submission of this idea for award will entitle King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals to use or utilize the idea for improving the University's functions and operations without infringing on the intellectual property right of the originator of the idea.
