Planer Safety

1. Make sure goggles and ear protection are worn at all times

2. Do not wear loose clothing, jewellery, etc. that could get caught in the machine

3. Keep hands away from feeder system

4. Be aware of the machine, i.e. on/off switch, use of guards, etc.

5. Make sure guards are in place before using

6. Measure twice, cut once. Confirm machine is set to proper thickness before starting

7. Ensure all wood used is free of imperfections (nails, staples, knots, etc) and that one side is flat to achieve uniform thickness

8. Work in pairs, one student feeding the wood into the machine (not forcing it) and the other receiving the wood from the out-feed

9. Stand to the side of the machine in case of "kick-back"

10. Clear area around the machine in case of tripping hazards while feeding wood

11. If feeding wood of different thicknesses, begin with the thickest piece

12. If you are planing a thick piece of wood, plane a small portion at a time (3mm) to ensure wood does not get jammed, etc.

13. Do not plane wood under 1 foot in length

14. If a jam occurs turn off machine, and use scrap wood to remove it

15. Ensure area around planer is clean before leaving the station when the job is complete; get extra pieces out of the way, brush shavings away once machine is off
