Chapter 3: REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR VETERINARY TECHNICIANS

Summary: This chapter describes registration standards and procedures for veterinary technicians.

1. Initial Registration

A. General.

Applicants shall establish their ability to work as veterinary technicians by passing an examination.

B. Qualifications for applicants.

Applicants for examination must have completed a minimum of two (2) years in a college program that is certified according to the standards adopted by the American Veterinary Medical Association's Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities or an equivalent program, as determined by the Board, and must have passed the Veterinary Technician National Examination described in Section 1(D) of this chapter.

C. Application.

The applicant shall submit:

1. A completed application and the registration fee required by Chapter 10, Section 4(40) of the rules of the Office of Licensing and Registration, entitled “Establishment of License Fees;”

2. The examination fee required by Chapter 10, Section 4(40 of the rules of the Office of Licensing and Registration, entitled “Establishment of License Fees;”

3. An official transcript from the veterinary technology program from which the applicant graduated. If the applicant has not graduated at time of application, the applicant may submit a letter of intent from the dean of the college in lieu of the transcript; and

4. Such additional information as the Board may require.

D. Examination.

The examination shall be the Veterinary Technician National Examination prepared by the Professional Examination Service. The Board shall give the examination at least once per year. The passing score shall be an adjusted score of 70% as determined for the State of Maine by the Professional Examination Service. The Board may, in advance of the examination, change the numerical passing score for the examination. An applicant who fails the examination may reapply to take the examination at a later date by reapplying and satisfying the requirements of this section.

2. License Term; Change of Address

Pursuant to 32 MRSA §4863, veterinary technician registrations expire on September 30 of each year. To ensure timely receipt of renewal notices and other correspondence, registrants shall promptly notify the board by fax, postal mail or email of any change of name or mailing address within 60 days after the change.
