PRAYER

RECAP à Key Ingredients to a balanced walk with God: THE WHEEL

§  CHRIST is the center (the hub) of our lives

·  4 spokes

2 Vertical (our relationship with God)

(1)  THE WORD (God’s word to us)

(2)  PRAYER (us talking to God)

2 Horizontal (our relationship with others)

(3)  WITNESSING (telling people about God)

(4)  FELLOWSHIP (meeting with and caring for fellow believers)

OBEDIENCE is the rim around the wheel symbolizing obedience to Jesus in all aspects of our lives.

·  What is prayer? Prayer is simply talking with God.

·  Gods wants to have a relationship with us. A key to any relationship is verbal communication. To have a good relationship with God, we must talk regularly.

Romans 8:15-17

èOur relationship with God is like a child’s relationship to a loving “daddy.”

How should we pray? Jesus teaches us how.

Matthew 6:5-14

§  Is “See You at the Pole” bad?

§  What does “babbling like the pagans” mean?

è Jesus provides a great example of how to pray. Use your own words.

ACTS: A Strategy for Prayer

A = Adoration

§  Words of adoration and praise to start out your prayer time

§  Psalm 9:1, 40:3, 48:1; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4; Colossians 1: 15-20

C = Confession

§  Confessing your sins before God is very important. God commands us to do this.

§  Psalm 32:5, Romans 10:9-10, 1 John 1:9, James 5:15-16

T = Thanksgiving

§  Give thanks to the Lord for his blessings and goodness

§  Psalm 107:1, Psalm 136, Philippians 1:3, Colossians 3:15-17, 1 Corinthians 15:57, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

S = Self and Others

§  Pray to God for (1) Yourself and (2) Others

§  Prayer for self: Psalm 17:6, 1 Tim 2:8, Philippians 4:6, Luke 22: 40-46

§  Prayer for others: Acts 8:15, James 5:15-16, Ephesians 6:18-19, Luke 6: 27-28, John 17: 20-21

* The more balanced these 4 are, the stronger your prayer life will be!

v  It is more effective to pray specifically rather than in vague generalities.

v  God’s PROMISE: John 15:7: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.”
