Honorary University Titles

This document summarises the nature and scope of honorary titles available to the University to recognise and formalise anongoing professional connectionbetween a distinguished individual and the University. These are honorary titles and do not carry any remuneration. They may, however, provide access to University resources and carry with them expectations regarding engagement with the University.

Honorary University awardsare covered by University Regulations (Honorary Degrees and Fellowships) and are not included here.

University. / To affiliate a scholar of national or international distinction with York St John University in a way which will make a significant contribution to YSJU’s scholarship or external collaborative arrangements.
Duties and contributions subject to negotiation by proposers.
Expectation that visiting professors will act positively to enhance the reputation of YSJU. / As negotiated by Dean.

contribution.

Visiting Professor
(Professional) / Honorary title recognising and affiliating a person who has built esteem and expertise in their profession or business to York St John University and can contribute to the development of an aspect of the University’s work on the basis of his or her professional experience. / To affiliate a professional of particular expertise, local, national or international distinction with York St John in a way which will make a significant contribution to York St John University and its external collaborative arrangements.
Expectation that post holders will be positive advocates for York St John University, and deliver workshops, masterclasses and lectures / Library access and IT.
Other resources only as relevant to collaborative activity and by negotiation / Nominated by Dean/Director or VCG member in the form of a letter with accompanying CV and details of the contribution the Honorary Professor might make to the University.

Cultural Fellow / Honorary title recognising a person in the cultural landscape who has built esteem and expertise in their particular field and can enhance York St John’s cultural life and encourage creativity through activities, events and performances. / To affiliate a person of particular talent, expertise, local, national or international distinction with York St John in a way which will make a significant contribution to the cultural life of the University.
Expectation that post holders will be positive advocates for York St John University, and deliver workshops, masterclasses and lectures. / Library access and IT.
Other resources only as relevant to collaborative activity and by negotiation / Nominated by Dean/Director or VCG member in the form of a letter with accompanying CV and details of the contribution the Cultural Fellow might make to the University.

Visiting Fellow / Honorary title recognising an individual affiliated to York St John and either:
a)engaged in collaborative research with YSJ researchers.
OR
b)contributing to the development of an aspect of the University’s work on the basis of his or her scholarship or professional experience. / To affiliate:
a) a researcher, with an established record of research output in peer-reviewed publications or comparable output with the University so that collaborative research might be taken forward.
Expectation of a contribution to the research culture of YSJU that may also include joint bidding for research funding.
Publications shall be listed on the University’s research data base and jointly or single authored contributions arising from the collaboration shall be published under the title of Visiting Fellow of YSJU.
OR
b)a professional or academic partner external to the University who wishes to develop a continuing professional relationship with YSJU.
The professional or scholarly activities that will form the basis for the Visiting Fellowship will initially be specified by the Dean. / Library access and IT.
Other resources only as relevant to collaborative activity and by negotiation with the Dean. / Nomination by Dean or Director in the form of a letter and including a CV and details of the proposed professional activities which will form the basis of the fellowship.
VC approves on behalf of Academic Board, following recommendation from DVC and with support of Dean,
Academic Board informed at next meeting, / 3 years renewable. The Fellowship will lapse when the professional association ceases.
The Dean of the relevant faculty, at the request of SSS, will periodically confirm the continuing value of the association. / Following approval, formal letter from HR Department / HR Department to add name to HR Information System
