Winter Birding 2014– Merryl Wright

This Winter, the group hasvisited 16 different sites on Monday outingsand recorded a total of128different species and 8,904individual birds. We had to abandon most of our day at Picnic Point when drizzle turned to rain. But overall, our Mondays were fine and dry, with plenty of birds about, even though many were not calling.

The locationswhere most species were recorded during Monday outingsthis winterwere Bruthen Loop Walk and Rail Trail (59), Nowa Nowa Reserve (49), Nyerimilang Park(48)and Goldsmiths in the Forest B&B (47).

Favourite or unusual bird sightingswould be Fluttering Shearwaters seen from the lookout over the Lakes at Nyerimilang Park, a dense raft of 1000 Eurasian Coots at Wattle Point being teased by dolphins popping up from below to give the birds a fright, White-throated Gerygones at Log Crossing, and many sightings of Scarlet and Crescent Honeyeaters.
