Newsletter No.520 June 2015

AGM

Windmill Estate Residents Association Committee would like to thank all the residents who came to the AGM; it was a great opportunity to speak to ourCounty and Borough councillors. The two main topics were Penton Field and Wolsey Hall.Wolsey Hall is under review by the Council as part of budget cuts, so the message is use it or lose it!The Committee put together aninformation and incident log sheet, these were distributed to all residents backing onto Penton Field, the log sheet is to be filled in and sent to the Council. (End of June is when the trial period finishes!) Councillor Ray Hannam has been in contact and there is a meeting on the 1st July to discuss this and look through the incident reporting data up until the 30 June, so, it’s important that any log sheets are sent in by the 29th latest!!! Ray would suggest marking the envelope for the officer concerned PETER LINKSON.

Following the AGM we would like to identify any areas on the estate where dog mess or anti-social behaviour is a regular problem, so attached to this newsletter is a sheet that the Committee would like you to complete and hand to your road steward when they collect this year’s subs.

If anyone would like to join the Committee you would be most welcome, new faces bring new ideas.

ESTATE MATTERS

It’s that time of year again when your road steward will be knocking on your door to collect the annual subscription fee. Please have your money ready and the information sheet. Subs remain at £1.50.

OWL MESSAGING

Recent Thefts from Vans in Waltham Cross and Cheshunt

Please note that overnight 3 Van break-ins have occurred from the evening of Monday 1st June 2015. Offenders have targeted FORD TRANSIT vans and gained entry by remotely unlocking vehicles without causing damage, tools have been taken on each occasion. Vehicles were broken into at theTravel Lodge on Great Cambridge Road, Crossbrook Street outside Pegasus House and Roundmoor Drive, Cheshunt. Also, a 2nd attempt was made to the same vehicle at Travel Lodge on the following night.Offenders have targeted Ford Transit vans due to what appears to be a weakness in their security. Please try not to leave tools overnight in vehicles and try and improve security with anti-theft locks.

Beware Apple iTunes scam emails

GetSafeOnline.org and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau are warning people to watch out for fraudulent emails claiming to be sent by Apple iTunes, detailing a recent purchase. The email shows a purchase receipt and states that if you did not make the purchase in question, you should click on the link provided to obtain a refund. Once redirected to a web page, you are asked to fill out your card and other personal details. This is a spam email with links to a malicious web page that is being used to capture personal details, most likely in order to access your bank accounts.

If you receive one of these emails, report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 or by using theironline reporting tool.

Remember iTunes will not request your personal details via email or through attached links.

Transfer of Funds to "Secure" Accounts

Six Hertfordshire residents have recently lost thousands of pounds worth of savings to fraudsters over the telephone, prompting us to re-issue advice about unexpected calls from fraudsters posing as police officers or bank staff. The callers convinced the residents that their bank account had been compromised and persuaded them to transfer the entire contents of their accounts into another “secure” account, which was held by the fraudsters. If you receive a telephone call you’re not expecting you should be suspicious. Do not be afraid to end the call. The police and banks would NEVER ask you to transfer money from one account to another over the telephone.

Please alert your family and neighbours and advise them that the police and banks would:

NEVER ask for your bank account details or PIN number over the phone. Do not disclose these details to anyone, no matter who they claim to be. NEVER ask you to withdraw money and send it to them via a courier, taxi or by any other means. NEVER call you to ask you to transfer your money into another account “for safekeeping” or for any other reason. If you are not happy with a phone call or are suspicious of a conversation you have with a caller then please end the call and contact police via the non-emergency number, 101.Remember, when reporting a suspicious phone call to police, wait at least five minutes before attempting to make the call or use a mobile phone or a neighbour’s phone to ensure you’re not still connected to the offender.

Burglaries - Cheshunt

There has been an increase in the reports of burglaries in the Cheshunt area, can I remind you of the following:

Check that all ground floor windows and doors are closed and locked when you are in the back garden, leave the house or go to bed. Upstairs windows should also be closed and locked when the house is unoccupied

PVCu doors can only be properly locked by lifting the handle and using the key.

Car and house keys should be kept out of sight. Don’t leave them on display on window sills, in porches, hallways or kitchens.

If you are away overnight or on holiday, use timer switches indoors to turn lights on and off, giving your home a ‘lived-in’ look.

A good quality alarm and external dusk till dawn low energy lighting, fitted near doors and other entry points, are excellent deterrents.

If you feel you may have seen or heard anything suspicious relating to the burglaries or any other crime please call 101. If you witness a crime in progress call 999.

CHESHUNT AND THEOBALDS GROVE ARE NOW ON THE TUBE MAP

On Monday 1 June 2015, the Borough of Broxbourne stations, Cheshunt and Theobalds Grove became part of the TfL network and are now featured on the London Overground map.

Under TfL, stations will be staffed at all times that services are running - improving safety and ensuring a 'turn up and go' service for customers with reduced mobility. The new routes will be integrated with TfL's real-time information and Journey Planning and all of the stations will be thoroughly cleaned and repaired over the coming months, with new benches, signage, CCTV, gate lines and modern ticket machines installed. TfL's real-time open data feeds, which enable developers to produce travel apps, will also include these services.

New trains will start to be introduced on the new London Overground routes in 2018, bringing greater capacity, walk-through carriages, air-conditioning, real-time information and other modern features. Until then, the current trains will be smartened up inside and out over the next 12 months to provide passengers with more comfortable journeys.

The good news for us is that over 80 per cent of rail journeys will reduce in price and all TfL concessions will apply, giving many customers substantial savings. The remaining 20 per cent of fares remain unchanged.
