a. Explain the origins of Islam and the growth of the Islamic Empire.

b. Identify the Muslim trade routes to India, China, Europe, and Africa and assess the economic impact of this trade.

c. Explain the reasons for the split between Sunni and Shia Muslims.

Closing: In 13 words or less students will answer the essential question. How did Islam spread and impac trade in the Mediterranean?

Work Session:

  1. Students will analyze documents of the crusades and determine how the Islamic world impacted the crusades.
  2. Class Discussion about documents

Closing: One page essay answering the essential question, “How did the Islamic world impact the crusades?”

Standards: SSWH6 The student will describe the diverse characteristics of early African societies before 1800CE

b.Describe the development and decline of the Sudanic Kingdoms (Ghana, Mali, Songhai); include the roles of Sundiata, and the pilgrimage of Mansa Musa to Mecca.

Warm-Up: Youtube video on Mansa Musa

Work Session:

  1. Presentation of Sudanic Kingdoms of Africa.
  2. Jigsaw activity. Students will be split into groups. Each Group will cover a Sudanic kingdom. Students will present information to class.
