ATTENDANCE

The Healthcare Science Pathway learning experience is designed to instill the importance of positive work habits and attitudes both at the clinical site and in the classroom. You must assume responsibility for regular attendance at:

  • Your school
  • Your clinical site on the assigned days

Remember, if you do not attend your high school you cannot report to your clinical site except by special permission. Your attendance will affect your eligibility for credit. It is also important in your evaluation by both your preceptor and teacher.

You must go to your clinical site every day that you are required to be in attendance. You are an employee of the business and your preceptor depends on you to be at work everyday. Your preceptor assigns you important work everyday and if you are absent then that work is not completed. You are an employee of the business partner and you must follow the same rules as other employees.

  • If you are sick and cannot attend clinical, you MUST call your preceptor (job supervisor) at least one hour before you are scheduled to work. You should always carry your preceptor’s number with you.
  • If you know you will be unable to attend clinical, you must notify your program instructor. She is responsible for your attendance. Continual non-calling can result in you being pulled from the program. YOU need to call---not a parent UNLESS it is an extreme emergency (accident, hospital, etc.)
  • We STRONGLY encourage you to schedule all dentist and doctor appointments outside of your clinical hours, however, should you have an appointment, let yourpreceptor and instructorknow PRIOR to the day of the appointment.
  • If you are absent due to a death in the family, you must call or have someone else call your preceptor and instructor.
  • Unexpected absences are considered to be evidence of undesirable work behavior and are STRONGLY discouraged.
  • No show to work, without a phone call and/or prior approval:
  • First Offense – conference with instructor, deduction in work ethic grade
  • Second Offense – possible removal from the program

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Athletes, band students, and other students with heavy extracurricular program obligations may be scheduled into the healthcare science program at the discretion of the instructor upon evidence that the additional responsibility WILL NOT INTERFERE with schoolwork and their clinical schedule.

PATHWAY SPECIFIC ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

*PATIENT CARE FUNDAMENTALS

Attendance:

Students will need to complete a minimum of 24 hours of clinical to pass this course. Attendance in clinical is mandatory and any absence from this is strongly discouraged. Any student missing clinical without a documented medical emergency will receive a zero for the day. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the site and their instructor that they are ill and will not be attending clinical. Clinicals may, or may not, be made up depending on the availability of the clinical site. Students not attending the minimum of 24 hours will not be allowed to sit for their CNA exam. There are a total of 3 scheduled clinical days, 8.5 hours each, which will give the student enough required time. Additionally, students wishing to sit for their CNA exam must be present for the required 85 classroom and 21 lab hours.

**ALLIED HEALTH

Attendance in the classroom and assigned clinicals is mandatory and any absence from this is strongly discouraged. Any student missing clinical without calling in will receive a zero for the day. It is the student’s responsibility to let the site and their instructor know that they are ill and will not be coming in. Students will need a written excuse signed by their parent to be excused from a clinical absence; however this time must be made up. All normal clinicals for this course will be scheduled during the student’s regular school day. Any clinical attendance outside of normal school hours will be arranged and approved in advance by the program instructor.

TARDINESS

As a healthcare science student, you must maintain a passing grade at school and have a good attendance record. Students with more than four unexcused tardies to any class in a nine week period will be placed on probation and require a counseling session with the instructor. Failure to meet these goals can result in termination from the program and possible loss of credit/pathway completion.

Section 2

GENERAL EMPLOYMENT TRAITS/ CLINICAL COMPETENCIES

Healthcare Science students are expected to excel in three major areas:

  • Academic Performance
  • General Employment Traits
  • Clinical Competencies

To participate in this program, you must demonstrate acceptable behavior at school and at the clinical sites. You are expected to follow the standards of behavior of the Effingham County School System, as well the standards of your clinical site. These standards of behavior will be discussed in the classroom and at the facility orientations.

Your instructor will make visits to your clinical sites. Your work habits and success on the job will be discussed and evaluated using the evaluation forms. Site visits will take place randomly throughout the semester.

You will be evaluated by both the clinical site preceptor and the classroom instructor on:

Employability/Work Ethic Skills

Clinical Competencies/Skills

You will be required to give the clinical site preceptor your documentation and have the papers returned with all required signatures by each due date. Failure to return paperwork signed in a timely manner may result in the student not being released to go to clinicals until paperwork is completed.

It is the student’s responsibility to make sure paperwork is delivered to the preceptor and returned by the due date to the course instructor. If you are late returning papers, you will receive a deduction of one letter grade per day.

You will be required to complete employability exercises/projects during the course of the semester. These will be explained and the due dates will be provided throughout the year.

*Both Patient Care Fundamentals and Allied Health students are required to obtain a pass on identified lab skills before attending their facility clinicals.

Section 3

BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES AT SCHOOL ANDTHE CLINICAL SITE

SUSPENSION/ISS/DETENTION POLICY

If a student is suspended from school, he/she may not participate in any school activity including his/herclinicals. Students assigned to ISS will not be allowed to leave to attend clinical. If a teacher assigns a student detention, the student must serve the detention at the convenience of the teacher. Work commitments DO NOT excuse the student from serving detention; therefore, avoid detention and remember HEALTHCARE SCIENCE STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE IN ISS OR SUSPENDED. The actions of one individual often determine the perception of a whole organization or group of students.

FAILURE TO PROGRESS/MISCONDUCT

Students suspended from their clinical site for theft, taking or dealing drugs, drinking alcohol, or for any reason, which may result in an arrest by the policewill be removed from the Healthcare Science program and will lose course credit/pathway completion.

CLINICAL SITE CHANGES

A student CANNOT change clinical sites without prior permission of the course instructor. A conference must be scheduled and appropriate forms required by the coordinator must be completed in the event that the changes clinical sites.

CLINICAL BEHAVIOR

WHILE PARTICIPATING IN CLINICALS STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO DEMONSTRATE PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOR AT ALL TIMES. VIOLOATION OF CLINICAL POLICY AND PROCEDURES WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. This includes but is not limited to the zero tolerance cell phone policy. Students are not allowed to have cell phones in clinical sites at any time. Students violating this policy will lose their clinical privilege.

*ALLIED HEALTH STUDENTS

STUDENTS ARE NOT TO REMAIN ON CAMPUS DURING THEIR CLINICAL WORK PERIODS. PARENTS AND STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR TRANSPORTATION AND SAFETY TO/FROM SCHOOL AND TO/FROM THEIR CLINICAL SITE.

If a student’s clinical is cancelled for their assigned day student will report to their normal classroom location. Students cannot sit in the media center or administrative offices when it is time to leave campus. Students must leave their home school campus.

Section 4

ELIGIBILITY/ADDITIONAL COURSE REQUIRMENTS

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

Discipline – Healthcare students are held to a high standard. Discipline referrals including insubordination, inappropriate behavior, threat/intimidation, fighting, disruptive behavior, aggressive behavior, inappropriate statements, defiance, profanity, skipping, cheating, excessive tardies, verbal conformation or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated and could result in dismissal from the program. These discipline referrals may be given by any teacher or administrator, not just the Healthcare teacher.

Industry Certifications - Students wishing to sit for any of the industry certifications must meet additional certification specific requirements. To be successful, students are expected to maintain an average of 80 or higher in their healthcare course. Courses consist of classroom, lab and clinical requirements and missed work is extremely hard to makeup and in many cases impossible. Attendance is critical. Failure to come to class will make a healthcare candidate ineligible to sit for the CNA exam.
