Volunteer at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2013

The Royal Society is looking for reliable and highly motivated volunteers to work on the 2013 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition. Our volunteers should be happy to do whatever task is required of them. Volunteers will need to have good teamwork skills, initiative and the stamina to work long hours. Evidence of a passion for science communication and/or skills in events management would be a plus.

The Summer Science Exhibition runs from 1 – 7 July 2013. It showcases the most exciting, cutting-edge science and technology research and provides a unique opportunity for members of the public to talk with scientists and ask them questions about their work. It will also include a supporting programme of events including talks, cafe scientifiques, workshops and interactive events.

With so much going on, there are lots of opportunities to participate in this high profile event through voluntary work placements. These placements offer ideal experience for someone looking to get involved in science communication or events management. Get involved to learn new skills, meet some of the world’s leading scientists and take the opportunity to get behind the scenes at a great event. The Exhibition is always a busy time at the Royal Society, but it is also a very fun and rewarding event to work on.

Roles include:

  • Exhibition and Event assistants – working with event organisers to coordinate event set-up/break-down, looking after high profile speakers, microphone handling, registering school groups, facilitating group visits to the Exhibition, manning the Exhibition help desk, and acting as a runner (placements available from 1 – 7 July).
  • Digital team – Producer and Content creator roles – working with the Web content manager to plan, schedule and produce interesting and original content for the exhibition website, liaising with staff regarding access to speakers, interviewing speakers and exhibitors, creating and editing text, audio and video content from around the Exhibition. (placements available from 1 – 7 July, preferably whole period).

For our enthusiastic and hard working team we can cover travel expenses up to £10 per day and will provide lunch and refreshments during the exhibition opening times. Benefits also include access to many great events and a great experience, working at an exciting exhibition. Please note we will be holding a training session for all our volunteers in June.

Interested? Please send a CV and brief cover letter explaining why you’d like to volunteer and any relevant experience to by Friday 17 May. Please include details of which role you would be interested in, how your experience would be beneficial for the role, your availability for the week and contact details for two referees. Interviews will take place by phone in the w/c 4 June. Volunteers will be required to attend training prior to their placement. For more information please call 0207 451 2683 or email
